These are the essential requirements to serve in the School Social Worker role:   

Masters in Social Work, Counseling or related discipline with a PPS

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (California Board of Behavioral Sciences)

Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in school-based social work, counseling, or mental health services preferred.

Experience working with blended, online, personalized, and/or virtual learning schools preferred.


These are the desired skills to serve in the School Social Worker role:

Excellent communication 

Proficient in digital engagement; computer & software, including Google Apps, Microsoft Office Suite, Internet, AI applications, digital communication tools (e.g., gmail, ParentSquare), online learning platforms, the Compass Student Information System and other Compass systems.

Ability to work collegially with others in the organization.

Methods of collecting and organizing data and information.

Ability to have crucial conversations with subordinates and colleagues to support Compass’ mission and vision. 

Demonstrated understanding of mental health disorders common in youth (e.g., anxiety, depression, trauma) and experience implementing evidence-based interventions.

Ability to identify scholar needs through screening and assessment and provide appropriate mental health services.


Essential duties and responsibilities for the School Social Worker may include:

Planning, development, and implementation of programs and services schoolwide that support scholar social, emotional, and mental health development.

School based oversight and case management services in order to support continued academic progress.

Provide consultation and professional development training to school site personnel on various topics including positive behavior supports, relationship building, and mental health. 

Monitor academic, behavior and attendance progress of scholars and make recommendations for appropriate interventions.

Assess, identify, and provide group and individual interventions to scholars with emotional, social, behavioral and/or attendance concerns.

Provides individual and group interventions in support of scholars’ overall health and mental wellness.

Assess school-wide social problems and situations interfering with scholars' access to an optimal personalized learning experience.

Provide social/mental health therapy to scholars and families.

Maintain case records and confidential documents to comply with mandated requirements.

Coordinate activities with outside service agencies, community programs for the purpose of providing referrals to scholars and families.

Inform the Director of Counseling Services regarding scholar trends, research, resources, tools to support school social work best practices.

Assists with organizational initiatives and performs other duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

Position is based in an approved home office in the State of California. As the safety, adequacy, and functionality of the approved home office is key, approval must be provided to work from any other location with the exception of the Central Office. May be required to also work from the Central Office, Learning Center, or other Compass location as directed by supervisor or the Superintendent & CEO. Must be able to work a flexible schedule as needed to meet the needs of scholars, Learning Coaches (parents), and staff. Must be able to travel throughout the State of California for school-related activities. Note - you will be required to notify HR if any work will be performed in San Francisco or out of state for any period of time for review and pre-approval.
