Sanitation Supervisor

The Sanitation Supervisor is responsible for leading the execution of cleaning, hygiene, and environmental control programs throughout the food manufacturing facility. This role ensures compliance with food safety standards, local, state, and federal regulations, and internal company policies. Additionally, the csupervisor oversees key programs such as waste management, pest control, chemical control, Good Work Practices (GPT), and follows up on deviations from the Environmental Monitoring Program (EMP).

The Sanitation Supervisor will also supervise the sanitation team, ensuring that all personnel follow established procedures and schedules in alignment with the Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS). This includes assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and supporting continuous improvement in sanitation practices. The Sanitation Supervisor also serves as the backup for the Food Safety Supervisor in operational and compliance-related tasks 

 

Key responsibilities include: 

Sanitation Program Management 

● Develop, implement, and maintain cleaning and sanitation programs across all facility areas.

● Manage cleaning schedules and ensure compliance with SSOPs, GMPs, HACCP, and other applicable standards.

● Coordinate deep cleaning activities, validations, and periodic verifications.

 

Team Leadership & Training

● Collaborate with the sanitation team: task assignment, scheduling, performance evaluation, and skill development.

● Provide ongoing training on cleaning procedures, chemical safety, PPE usage, and food safety protocols.

● Foster a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and teamwork. Regulatory Compliance

● Ensure compliance with OSHA, FDA, USDA, EPA, and other regulatory bodies.

● Participate in internal and external audits, inspections, and certification processes.

● Maintain updated records of cleaning activities, chemical usage, and validations. Quality Control & Inspections 

● Conduct regular inspections of production lines, equipment, and common areas.

● Perform verification tests such as ATP and visual audits.

● Collaborate with the quality team to resolve deviations and implement corrective actions.

 

Ingredient & Allergen Risk Management

● Participate in ingredient risk assessments and allergen program validations.

● Ensure effective cleaning practices to prevent cross-contamination.

 

Chemical Contaminants & Foreign Object Mitigation

● Oversee preventive controls for contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, and mycotoxins.

● Implement strategies to mitigate foreign objects in the production process.

Inventory & Chemical Management

● Monitor inventory of cleaning chemicals and supplies.

● Ensure safe storage, handling, and disposal of chemicals in compliance with regulations.

 

Safety & Environmental Compliance 

● Promote proper use of PPE and safe chemical handling practices.

● Ensure sanitation activities do not compromise process safety or product quality.

 

Traceability & Hold Protocols

● Verify compliance with product hold and release protocols.

● Ensure traceability of cleaning and sanitation activities.

 

Waste Management

● Coordinate the collection, segregation, storage, and proper disposal of solid, liquid, and hazardous waste.

● Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations.

● Maintain records of waste generation and disposal. Pest Control

● Supervise the pest control program in coordination with external providers.

● Conduct regular inspections to identify signs of infestation and ensure preventive measures are in place.

● Maintain updated documentation of monitoring, treatments, and corrective actions.

 

Chemical Control

● Ensure proper use, safe storage, and accurate labeling of all chemicals used in sanitation.

● Train staff on safe chemical handling and interpretation of Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

● Coordinate with the safety team for audits and regulatory compliance.

 

Good Work Practices (GPT)

● Ensure sanitation and cleaning practices align with company standards for efficiency, safety, and quality.

● Identify opportunities for process improvement and propose solutions to optimize time, resources, and outcomes. ● Document and standardize operational procedures related to sanitation.

EMP Deviations Follow-Up

● Monitor and follow up on deviations identified in the Environmental Monitoring Program (EMP).

● Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to determine the source of deviations and prevent recurrence.

● Coordinate and implement corrective and preventive actions with quality and production teams.

 

Food Safety Supervisor Backup

● Serve as the backup for the Food Safety Supervisor in operational, administrative, and compliance functions.

● Participate in meetings, audits, and key food safety activities as needed.

About you:

Chemical, industrial engineering, food industry, Food Technology, or related field. Industrial engineer / Chemical Engineer or Engineer IMA. 3+ years food industry experience in a manufacturing environment and or continuous improvement role. Demonstrated experience in Sanitation protocols and methods Conversant in Continuous Improvement tools and methodologies Auditing (as internal auditor, GFSI or equivalent standard). Strong Computer Skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) English advanced level oral and written. Experience working in a dynamic and complex environment.
