Job Description

The Laboratory Assistant – Sample Prep plays a critical role in the Chemistry Laboratory by supporting the preparation of food and agricultural samples for analytical testing, including pesticide, nutrition, and contaminant analysis. This position ensures the integrity and traceability of samples throughout their lifecycle and contributes directly to the lab’s mission of delivering high-quality, timely testing services.

ResponsibilitiesReceive and log samples, ensuring accurate tracking and documentation.Determine appropriate preparation methods based on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).Operate equipment such as grinders, choppers, and food processors to homogenize samples.Document all sample details and manage storage and disposal.Enter data into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) with precision and accuracy.Maintain a clean and organized workspace, ensuring equipment is sanitized between uses.Adhere to chemical safety protocols to prevent cross-contamination.Communicate frequently with the sample receiving team and chemists to clarify client preferences and prioritize tasks.Troubleshoot issues in the prep process with professionalism under pressure.Calibrate and maintain lab equipment, logging maintenance activities and identifying when external repairs are needed.Train others in sample preparation techniques and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.Essential SkillsHigh School Diploma or GED.Experience in fast-paced environments such as food service, lab prep, manufacturing, assembly, or production.Ability to follow SOPs accurately.Proficient in data entry using Excel and LIMS.Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.Comfortable working in noisy and dusty environments.Quick learner with strong attention to detail.Clear written and verbal communication skills.Professional demeanor under pressure.Reliable, punctual, and able to work as part of a team.Additional Skills & QualificationsOrganized and efficient multitasker.Adaptable to changing workloads.Basic computer literacy.Work Environment

The position is located onsite at the Chemistry Laboratory in Beaverton, OR. The lab is a clean, organized, and fast-paced environment with a strong emphasis on hygiene and safety. The team consists of two sample prep assistants, and this role will train under the current assistant. The lab can be noisy, and some areas may require hearing protection or dust masks. PPE such as gloves and lab coats are required. The role involves standing for long periods, repetitive hand movements, and lifting up to 30 lbs. The schedule is Monday through Thursday with early start times (6:30–7:30 AM) and a shorter Friday, depending on workload. The work is a mix of independent tasks and team collaboration, with a management style that values direct communication and accountability.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $37960.00 - $37960.00/yr.
