Job Description
This position is responsible for executing excellence in sample processing and comminution techniques in a high-volume, fast-paced commercial lab. Sample preparation is the first stage of the sample life cycle and it is crucial that all steps (processing, aliquoting, labeling, and storage) are completed correctly to ensure the accuracy of lab testing. This position will also support the critical operations in our Fiber Lab, utilizing basic laboratory skills, paying close attention to detail, and working effectively on a team. The Fiber lab is a more complex lab that reenacts the human digestive system to 'digest' food samples through a series of 10-20 lab methods to determine the amount of Fiber in a food sample. This is a great way to build technical skills.
ResponsibilitiesFollow preparation techniques for the processing of samples for lab testing, including the use of grinding mills and other comminution techniques (i.e. blenders, Magic Bullet grinders, liquid nitrogen).Ensure accurate labeling of sample cups with assigned unique identifiers.Record sample preparation techniques and delivery details into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) software.Maintain organization structure of samples by accurately delivering and disposing of samples as necessary.Follow all lab safety and quality requirements and procedures (i.e. PPE, GMP, OSHA, ISO).Organize workload and prioritize samples to maximize output and meet deadlines.Execute food testing methods.Perform routine instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.Provide cross-functional support as business needs dictate.Facilitate analytical testing, including Enzyme Digestion, LECO, Ash Analysis, Protein Analysis, and some HPLC analysis.Essential SkillsMinimum of 2 years' experience in a lab setting or AS in a science-related field.AS or BS degree in a science-related field (AS degree can be substituted for 2 years’ experience).3-6 months of industry lab experience/internship experience with knowledge of sample preparation and analytical instruments including HPLC or Protein Analyzers.Additional Skills & QualificationsAbility to use multiple computer systems (LIMS, Microsoft Office).Broad knowledge of food testing services.Strong attention to detail.Fast learner with natural curiosity and drive to learn.Proficient in multitasking and prioritization of tasks.Able and willing to ask clarifying questions.Demonstrates flexibility in daily tasks and changes in workload.Professional written and verbal communication skills.Strives in a fast-paced, changing environment.Possesses strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team setting.Proactive mindset.Able to lift 40 pounds.Able to stand for 5-6 hours daily.Able to complete various tasks while wearing required PPE (i.e. face shields, hearing protection, steel toed shoes, OSHA-approved safety glasses, laboratory coat, cryogenic gloves).Work Environment
The position is full-time with shifts from 7-3 and 9-5, alternating during the week. The role involves wearing PPE, including face shields, hearing protection, steel-toed shoes, OSHA-approved safety glasses, and laboratory coats. Core summer hours may allow for shorter days on Fridays, depending on the lab group. The position comes with holiday pay for the 6 major holidays.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $23.00 - $23.00/hr.
