Position Description
Under the direct supervision of the Metro Safety Administrator, in the Human Resources Department, the Safety Specialist assists in the administration of the Safety and Injury on Duty (IOD) program throughout Metro Nashville Government. This position will require fieldwork to be performed on a daily basis with Metro departments.

Typical Duties
+ Assists the Safety Administrator with Metro’s Safety and Injury-on-Duty (IOD) programs.
+ Ensures Metro-wide compliance with Civil Service Rules, Benefit Board Rules, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) / Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration (TOSHA), and other related federal and state statutes.
+ Assists in overseeing vendors providing IOD services related to occupational medicine delivery, third-party claims administration, medical, and vocational case management.
+ Consults with department safety coordinators in identifying potential hazards, provides assistance regarding additional safety precautions that would protect employees, and prevents future injuries and claims.
+ Contributes to the development of policies and procedures relating to Safety and the IOD program.
+ Provides department safety coordinators with guidance on IOD claims, including intake, setup, reporting to the vendor, documentation, the direction of care, and return to work.
+ Participates in the development and oversight of a Metro-wide return to work program for IOD employees.
+ Acts as a liaison between Human Resources, injured employees, managers/supervisors, safety managers, third-party administrator, and the Civil Service Commission and Benefit Board.
+ Counsels managers, supervisors, and line employees regarding IOD and Safety-related policies, procedures, rules, laws, and regulations.
+ Audits health and safety programs throughout Metro departments.
+ Conducts inspections and follow-up inspections of facilities and work activities, to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation compliance.
+ Supports vendors and departmental safety staff related to accident investigation, medical treatment, benefit delivery, and return-to-work.
+ Point of contact for IOD and safety related inquiries.
+ Assists department safety coordinators with completing the more complex claims.
+ Maintains records of injuries provided by IOD Administration vendor and provides department safety coordinators with data via the Safety SharePoint site, shared drive, interpretation of IOD data, and identifies abatement responses to the cause of injuries.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of industrial/occupational safety experience.
*Industrial/occupational safety experience refers to the knowledge, skills, and abilities gained through work activities focused on preventing workplace injuries, illnesses, and accidents. It involves understanding and applying safety principles, risk assessment techniques, and control measures to create a safe and healthy work environment. .
*Additional experience may be considered in lieu of education."
LICENSE REQUIRED:
Valid Driver License

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Experience as an Occupational Safety Professional
+ Experience in manufacturing/industrial environment, and be certified as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
+ Experience administering the drug and alcohol testing program
+ Experience managing Injury-On-Duty (IOD) or similar Workers' Compensation program
+ Current Safety-related certifications such as: Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH),Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST), OSHA Authorized Trainer in General Industry or Construction
