The Role

AvalonBay Communities is seeking an experienced Safety Manager to play a key role in maintaining a safe, healthy, and compliant work environment across our multifamily developments. This role requires a proactive and knowledgeable safety professional who is bilingual in English and Spanish and has hands-on experience in multifamily and hospitality construction or operations.

You will serve as a safety leader, providing oversight, education, and enforcement of safety policies and regulations at assigned communities and business units, while also offering support to additional sites as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

Promote and enforce compliance with AvalonBay’s safety and health policies, as well as all local, state, and federal regulations

Build strong relationships with associates, contractors, vendors, and business partners to cultivate a positive and proactive safety culture

Take immediate action to halt work when immediate danger to life or health (IDLH) conditions exist and guide correction efforts

Investigate incidents, identify root causes, and implement corrective measures to prevent recurrence

Serve as a hands-on expert in the field, capable of managing complex safety scenarios with minimal supervision

Analyze safety metrics and incident trends; make data-informed recommendations for safety program improvements

Deliver training and orientation sessions tailored to diverse teams, often in Spanish, to ensure full comprehension of safety practices and policies

May oversee and develop junior safety personnel or project teams, setting goals and monitoring progress

Qualifications:

Experience & Education:

Minimum of 5 years of relevant safety experience, with a strong preference for candidates who have worked in multifamily and hospitality environments

Four-year degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Construction Management, or a related field preferred (or equivalent combination of education and experience)

Language Requirement:

Fluency in English and Spanish (required) – must be able to train, communicate, and write safety documentation in both languages

Certifications:

OSHA 30 (required)

CPR/First Aid (required within 30 days of hire)

BCSP certification (e.g., CHST®, CSP®) is preferred

Skills & Knowledge:

Proficient understanding of OSHA regulations and national safety standards

Ability to conduct site assessments, prepare written reports, and track corrective actions to completion

Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and internet-based safety platforms

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

Ability to regularly stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, and lift up to 50 lbs

Must be able to climb stairs/ladders and navigate active construction or maintenance areas

Regular travel to communities, job sites, and regional offices required

Must be able to wear PPE as required, including hard hats, gloves, and safety glasses
