The Opportunity:
The Safety Coordinator is a member of the Smurfit Westrock Solvay Safety Department. This position provides Safety & Health technical consulting support and leadership to the Solvay Mill, to ensure sustainable compliance and reduce the frequency and severity of occupational injuries and illnesses and associated workers’ compensation costs.
How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:
Support the implementation of the WestRock Annual Safety and Health Strategy to achieve a Zero Injury Culture.
Provide leadership to help in the development, implementation, and maintenance of procedures and programs designed to eliminate Life Changing Events.
Support the implementation of the WestRock Safety and Health Strategy to eliminate Life Changing Events.
Aid in development and implementation of safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.
Support to the Hazard Recognition & Control Processes that identify and control physical hazards through on-site inspections.
Perform audits and inspections of the facilities to detect existing or potential incidents and health hazards, aids in determining corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.
Assist Safety Manager to ensure all key safety and health operational controls are in place and action items are resolved on a timely basis.
Aid in the investigation of incidents and injuries and cooperates in the preparation of material and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
Work with the Safety Manager to track all activity for the facility related to lost work time, return to work initiatives, and restricted duty provision.
Promote safety engagement.
Provide information, signs, posters, barriers, and other materials to warn of potential and actual safety hazards and to prevent access to hazardous conditions
Keep current on specific requirements imposed by governmental agencies through review of the current and/or proposed statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits.
Maintain a working knowledge on the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and how they may impact the site.

Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s Degree is in Occupational Health & Safety, Biology, Chemistry, or similar technical discipline with some heavy industry experience.
Preferred: 1 – 3 years heavy industry experience.
EHS experience in manufacturing: planning and implementing Health & Safety programs in a manufacturing environment.
Experience with regulatory compliance, incident investigation, and safety engineering.
Language Skills – Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to present training in a clear and understandable manner; able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Excellent organizational skills – able to prioritize and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently as a part of a team.
Computer Skills - knowledge of Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
Some weekend call duty and support for production outage.
Up to 10% travel may be required.
Other Qualifications
ASP or CSP certification is desirable.
