The Meijer Store Leadership Internship is a dynamic 11-week program designed to immerse students in leading retail teams to achieve real business outcomes. This experience is ideal for students who thrive in leadership roles and are passionate about guiding teams toward shared goals.

Leadership Development

This internship is designed to accelerate readiness for future leadership roles at Meijer. Interns who demonstrate strong leadership capabilities and a passion for retail may be considered for full-time opportunities and structured development programs. With continued growth and performance, participants have the potential to advance into roles such as Store Director - leading multimillion-dollar operations and large teams of several hundred team members.

Internship Structure

Phase One: Build foundational retail knowledge and leadership competencies

Phase Two: Step into an official leadership role, gaining experience of driving team engagement, customer experience, and business performance.

This will require a flexible schedule such as working some nights and/or weekends.  Conversion to a full-time team member following the internship will be based on interest, performance throughout the internship, and leadership potential. 

Intern Team Leader Job Profile Summary:

Lead and coach team members to deliver exceptional customer service and meet sales goalsManage daily operations across store departmentsDrive performance through mentoring and trainingMaintain store standards and ensure a safe, welcoming environmentCommunicate effectively with customers and team membersWork a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends

What you will be doing as an Intern Team Leader:

Lead and support team members across assigned departments, ensuring alignment with store goals and operational priorities.Assist in managing department-level performance metrics including sales, shrink, and labor.Model and reinforce fast, friendly, and inclusive customer service.Mentor and coach team members to exceed service and performance expectations, with a focus on developing future leaders.Facilitate onboarding and training for new team members, ensuring readiness and engagement.Collaborate with department leaders to identify opportunities for improvement and implement solutions.Communicate regularly with customers and team members to assess needs, resolve issues, and promote a positive store culture.Promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive work environment.Demonstrate adaptability by working a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.Take the initiative in leading daily huddles, supporting cross-functional coordination, and contributing to store-wide initiatives.Perform other leadership duties as assigned, with increasing responsibility based on performance.Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

The Meijer Store Leadership Internship is an experiential program designed for students currently enrolled in a degree seeking program, who are considering future careers in this exciting fieldAbility to work flexible shifts to gain exposure to the full operation of the storePrior experience in retail is preferred but not required.Demonstrated leadership potential through school, work, or extracurricular activities.Curiosity, initiative, and a desire to learn and grow through hands-on experience.Interest in leading teams and making a positive impact on others.Ability to build relationships and collaborate with diverse team members.Comfortable communicating with others and open to feedback and coaching.Motivated by achieving goals and contributing to team success.Eager to develop the skills and mindset required for future leadership roles, including Area Lead, through structured development and real-world experience.Committed to leading with dignity and respect and making a meaningful impact on team members and the community.
