Research Technologist - Bacteriology

Summary: The Research Technologist – Bacteriology supporting the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) EURAFCENT under the Bacterial and Parasitic Disease Research Program (BPDRP), with a focus on supporting laboratory and field-based research related to emerging infectious diseases across African, European, and Asian countries. The Research Technologist will support studies ranging from bio surveillance and molecular analysis to laboratory safety and data management. The work under this contract will be performed at the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit EURAFCENT offices in Cairo, Egypt, or at other designated locations in special circumstances. Responsibilities Essential Job Functions: Assist in the design, development, and implementation of field and laboratory research protocols related to bacterial pathogens. Support proposal and protocol development (subject to Government approval). Conduct bio surveillance sample collection, including biological specimen handling and blood draws, in accordance with IRB-approved protocols. Perform molecular, clinical, and microbiological laboratory testing including assay development and validation. Assist in the maintenance of data repositories and perform data entry, organization, and quality control. Participate in epidemiological research, leveraging collected data to support public health and military readiness efforts. Ensure compliance with laboratory safety regulations and support health monitoring procedures for research staff (e.g., medical screenings, vaccinations). Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and liaise with government, military, and international health professionals as needed. Qualifications Necessary Skills and Knowledge: Proficiency in word-processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation. Professional knowledge in principles, theories, and practices of standard bacteriological methodologies. Ability to follow standard operating procedures. Good communication skills. Ability to work effectively with colleagues at different levels of the organization. Advanced knowledge of laboratory safety procedures. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree plus more than 3 years of experience, or a high school diploma plus more than 10 years of experience, in microbiology or a directly related scientific field. Proficiency in spoken and written English (level III (as defined by the U.S. Department of State)) and Arabic. Travel Requirements: Travel may include Djibouti, Jordan, Nigeria, and other countries in Africa and the Middle East, depending on research requirements.
