Duties Description The Research Scientist 4, Grade 27 (RS 4) will serve as part of the Division of Vaccine Excellence’s Leadership team. The primary responsibility of this role is to lead and conduct research involving the formulation, conduct, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of scientific investigations related to confidence in vaccines, level of confidence in vaccine providers, and level of confidence in policies (e.g., vaccine approval process, recommendations for who should and should not receive a vaccine, and when vaccines should be administered). Outcomes will inform evidence-based programming and policymaking across the Division’s units (Bureau of Vaccine-preventable Diseases, Bureau of Vaccine Programs, and Bureau of School Immunization). Access to vaccines alone is not sufficient to achieve equitable and widespread coverage. Building and sustaining public trust in vaccines is critical to addressing disparities in vaccination rates and ensuring community protection against vaccine-preventable diseases. The incumbent will lead the development of mixed research methods (e.g., focus groups, key informant interviews, surveys) to further understand communities’ needs and vaccine confidence challenges, and work with the other bureaus to develop and adapt acceptable and efficacious approaches to increasing vaccine confidence. The individual will provide direct consultation to division staff, advisory bodies, and local health departments regarding variables that impact vaccination decision-making and intervention methods to increase acceptance of vaccines. This position will also function as a member of a cross-departmental team—including the Division of Epidemiology (Bureau of Statistics and Data Systems), Public Affairs Group (media and marketing), and the Office of Science—collaborating to identify multi-level influences on vaccine hesitancy and confidence; the goal is to achieve and maintain high vaccination coverage for all individuals residing in the state. This is critical as New Yorkers continue to be vaccinated at low and variable rates, pockets of significant under-vaccination exist that allow for disease outbreaks, and misinformation continues to erode the public’s trust in vaccines.
Minimum Qualifications Non Competitive: Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Biostatistics, Public Health, Epidemiology, or a related field, AND five years of professional post-degree research experience* in the appropriate field*Substitutions: a master’s degree in an appropriate field may substitute for one year of experience, and a doctorate in an appropriate field may substitute for an additional year of experience. Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates who possess experience in the following fields: statistical software such as SAS or SPSS, cross-sector immunization programming, translating data into public health action, completion of research studies, and building trust in scientific-based health benefits.
