About the Internship:
The Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute is seeking a highly motivated Research Intern to join the Division of Medical Oncology under mentorship. This internship is an excellent opportunity for students interested in clinical research, gastrointestinal malignancies, and translational medicine.
The primary focus of the internship will be the development of an investigator-initiated clinical trial examining the incidence and prevalence of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), particularly in relation to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). The internship will include structured didactic sessions, independent research, clinical exposure, and the potential opportunity to co-author a scientific publication.
Internship Objectives:
Gain a foundational understanding of clinical research design and pancreatic cancer.
Conduct an in-depth literature review on SIBO and its clinical associations.
Participate in meetings with collaborators and potential industry partners.
Assist in drafting research documents including a Letter of Intent (LOI) and clinical trial protocol.
Program Schedule:
Week 1: Literature review on SIBO and its association with pancreatic cancer.
Week 2: Review retrospective data for patients diagnosed with SIBO.
Week 3: Liaise with diagnostic and therapeutic companies related to SIBO.
Week 4: Draft Letter of Intent for an investigator-initiated trial focused on PDAC and SIBO.
Weeks 5–6: Draft clinical trial protocol for the investigator-initiated study on PDAC and SIBO.
Expectations & Commitments:
Attend on-campus didactic sessions with the PI.
Participate in clinical research team meetings.
Demonstrate initiative, critical thinking, and effective communication.
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
Qualifications
Eligibility & Preferred Qualifications:
Current undergraduate student in a health sciences, biology, pre-med, or related field.Strong interest in clinical research and oncology.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Prior research experience is a plus but not required.Req ID : 11069
