Salary Range: $74,618-$107,264/year. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.


Job Summary:

In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

The Health Economist reports to the Principle Investigator or designate of research projects.  The Health Economist is responsible for the design, conduct, and completion of health economics and health services research in cancer control. As required, the Health Economist provides assistance in the development of new cancer control initiatives by conducting and presenting economic analyses to inform policy-making and to further research in the area of health economics and health services.

Duties/Accountabilities:

•    Consistent with PHSA and BCCA policy and professional standards of practice, conducts quantitative and/or qualitative health economics and health service research studies in collaboration with health care professionals within the BCC, PHSA and its agencies, the Ministry of Health Services and other external partners.

•    Develops, critiques and executes decision analytic models for economic evaluation of health care programs by collecting, linking and analyzing primary data and /or large administrative datasets to model outcomes from a clinical, population and budgetary perspective.

•    Documents the design, results, and interpretation of health economics, clinical, and health service research studies in scientific manuscripts and research reports for dissemination to researchers and internal and external partners. Prepares abstracts, posters and oral presentations for submission to scientific conferences. Contributes analytic data to knowledge transfer activities.

•    Develops research grant proposals and reports for grant applications to funding agencies.

Qualifications:

A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Masters’ Degree in Health Economics, Health Services, Health Policy or related discipline and 1-2 years related experience in a healthcare or academic research environment.

Knowledge of health economics theory and demonstrated competence in the application of health economics methods.  Knowledge of study design, data collection and analysis. Demonstrated ability to perform advanced data manipulation, analysis and information presentation through the use of database and spreadsheet software. Working knowledge of cancer control and Canadian health systems. Ability to adapt to new technology.  Excellent communication skills including the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.  Ability to collaborate and work within a team while working independently.  Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills including the ability to comprehend complex issues and related data/information and present information in concise and meaningful ways.  Demonstrated organization skills to generate work plans to meet project deadlines within timeline, scope and budget.  Ability to handle multiple concurrent tasks.
