The University of Miami/UHealth Department of SCCC BCSR has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Research Associate 3 to work at the UHealth medical campus in Miami, FL. CORE JOB SUMMARY The Research Associate 3, SOM assumes responsibility for the design and performance of research focused on the development of novel experimental therapies for human malignancies. The incumbent contributes to collaborations with scientists within the University of Miami or elsewhere. Moreover, this individual works as part of a team and assists with the maintenance of laboratory equipment, protocols, and supplies. CORE JOB FUNCTIONS Maintains daily operations and performs procedures related to new and on-going research projects. Assists with ordering, purchasing, and maintenance of all required reagents and supplies for laboratory activities, and monitors and maintains inventory of supplies and stocks. Assists with the maintenance of institutional biosafety and animal care protocols, laboratory safety records, and standard operating procedures. Performs and assists other research staff with standard laboratory techniques. Develops, adapts, and implements new laboratory procedures. Records, organizes, and writes up experimental results for submission of manuscripts and for scientific presentations. Keeps abreast of latest literature in the field and searches for references to technical problems. Maintains current knowledge of the methods and techniques related to the specific field of research. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. Department Specific Functions The Research Associate 3 will work with the BCSR Team and will provide professional level support and coordination for research and administrative related activities. The incumbent will implement day-to-day tasks related to research protocols and office support to facilitate the efficient operations of BCSR. Facilitate teamwork flows in collaboration with team members to ensure that tasks, priorities, and goals are completed and coordinated with management. Manage and perform all aspects of operation in the Histology area including preparation and maintenance of records and reports, analysis of testing methodologies, training, instrumentation, quality control and compliance. This includes keeping accurate computer research records, maintain/update data in computer-based applications/databases, record experimental data, prepare data for analysis, and contribute to the analysis, as well as maintaining records for quality control and quality assurance. Perform and train personnel on histology-related techniques, including animal necropsy, tissue trim and embedding following defined standard operating procedure (SOP); paraffin microtomy and OCT cryotomy, complex serial and step sectioning; histological staining, immunohistochemistry and in-situ hybrization techniques. Develop, adapt and implement new lab and histological procedures, including biomarker characterization. Work independently and be able to solve technical and scientific problems. Monitor timelines and track study/project performance, including quality of the work and turnaround time, and analyze the successful completion of short- and long-term goals. Develop and implement QA procedures, including preparing laboratory for quality control inspections related to relevant accreditations (e.g., CAP, GLP). Prepare online request form and materials for brochures and reports, as required by the study/project. Review documents to generate reports, including the implementation of a tracking and laboratory information system. Reviews data collected and inserted into the study/project database. Review and track client requests, medical reports, and samples, including the supervision of tissue block access, retrieval, and inventory control. Meet budgetary objectives and adjust project scope, project schedule and project costs based on project constraints and financial analysis. Develop service fees. Assist researchers and lab members with/while establishing, developing and performing appropriate histological protocols using advanced techniques to prepare tissue for examination and analysis. These protocols usually include grossing and fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning and staining. Oversee other support staff, plan their day-to-day workload by setting the work pace, coordinating work assignments, identifying and solving problems, and define appropriate completion times. Distribute and balance workload and tasks (including grossing) with established workflow, skill level and occupational specialization; make the necessary adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established priorities to ensure timely accomplishment of assigned research team tasks. Schedule coverage for the subsections within the work unit, adjusting in lieu days and annual leave as needed. Assist with lab management duties; ensure equipment is operated and maintained according to manufacturer's instructions; ensure supplies are adequate for the work to be performed. Schedule and support other lab members on a variety of additional routine technical laboratory procedures in molecular biology, cell culture and animal-related techniques, like genotyping, prepare and administer compounds to mice, observing and recording physical signs of rodent health, collection of routine diagnostic samples, necropsy and tissue and organ harvest, rodent surgical procedures, non-invasive imaging of mice. Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures; safeguard University assets; participate in university/outside educational training as required. Maintain accurate records for quality control, quality assurance and research data. Develop and implement a quality control system. Perform other duties as requested. + Establishes patient/participant screening procedures with Principal Investigator and collects data from patient charts, medical records, interviews, questionnaires, diagnostic tests and other sources. + Organizes and handles the flow of information to and from study participants, including study participant contact information. + Establishes/maintains contact with patient/participants, health care providers, community agencies and study sponsors. + Schedules appointments and updates calendars. + Maintains logs/progress reports to track enrolled participants. + Maintains and manages databases; enters data appropriately. Ensures data integrity and consistency in computer database and written records. + Maintains consent forms, all other documentations and sponsor correspondences. + Maintain knowledge of local, state and national initiatives and events that address cancer and health disparities. + Able to accommodate a changing work schedule and travel to different locations in the Tri-County area. + Able to handle multiple studies simultaneously. + Prepares monthly enrollment reports. + Plans meetings and takes detailed minutes, as needed. + Responsible for ordering and maintaining stock of necessary supplies for projects and office. + Assists in any administrative related activities including time accounting and billing in a timely and accurate manner. + Performs other duties as assigned. + Excellent English skills (both oral and written) required. Creole/Spanish preferred. Requirements: Education: Bachelor's degree, equivalent experience will also be considered. Certification and Licensing: Relevant certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists is preferred. Experience: Minimum 5 years of relevant experience. Experience with both human and animal tissue processing is a plus. Experience in providing expert customer service to a diverse population in a scientific environment is highly desired. Detail-oriented. + Mechanical ability and dexterity when performing the different histological techniques. + Ability to supervise. + Strong desire to learn + Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures. + Excellent computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office and animal/record management databases is required. + Ability to establish and/or maintain laboratory/veterinary/animal husbandry records. + Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control. + Knowledge of laboratory operations and/or procedures. + Ability to perform routine maintenance and repairs on laboratory equipment. + Excellent organizational and time-management skills. + Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
