The Wall Street Journal is seeking a reporter in Tokyo to cover business, finance and geopolitics in Japan and across Asia. The central focus of the role will be major Japanese-headquartered companies including Toyota, Sony and SoftBank, as well as Asia’s biggest, most dynamic companies, and how they are navigating a global economy being reshaped by U.S. tariffs, intense Chinese competition and technological upheaval. This assignment touches on many issues of high interest for our business-minded audience, such as the debate over electric vehicles, artificial intelligence and the geopolitical currents affecting critical business decisions. We’re looking for a reporter who can join the dots between these broad themes to produce insightful, ambitious and revelatory reporting on Japan and the wider region. The reporter will collaborate closely with colleagues across Asia and around the world and should be a quick study when news emerges in unexpected areas. The position will be based in Tokyo. You will: + Break news on your beat. + Conceptualize and deliver deeply reported enterprise stories as well as profiles of the people driving change in Japan. + Collaborate with colleagues in audio, video and visuals to craft a compelling body of work. You have: + Experience covering corporate news, getting scoops and writing ambitious stories. + Outstanding writing ability and a knack for explaining developments in Asia clearly to audiences who may be far away. + Fluency in Japanese is strongly preferred. + Ability to think big and across coverage boundaries. + The position will be based in Tokyo and report to the Tokyo bureau chief.
