LING 365 – Pragmatics 1.​ (3 credits) section 001 - Please note that this course is co-taught.

Contract start/end dates: August 27, 2025/September 25, 2025

Location: EDUC 627
 

Course details: A self-contained hands-on introduction to the study of how the conventional meaning of sentences relates to the context where they are uttered. Topics include the studyof meanings that are determined with respect to the context of utterance (indexicality), meanings that place requirements on what language users take for granted (presuppositions), and meanings that are the result of predictable contextual inferences (implicatures). The focus is on empirical issues.


Salary: $1766 (pro-rated salary, based on the co-teaching configuration)

Position Summary:

A Course assignment includes all or part of the following teaching activities:

a) preparation of the Course and Course plan; 
b) delivery of the Course; 
c) evaluation of students; 
d) submitting to the University a report on student attendance and student grades; 
e) supervision of Teaching Assistants or any other teaching support staff; 
f) upon request, review of their students’ grades; 
g) meeting with students, being available to answer questions and give advice concerning Course content and requirements; 

Employees shall perform their duties in compliance with the Pedagogical Regulation and as specified in the administrative directives of the Hiring Unit. An Employee shall use appropriate pedagogical methods and material.

Teaching Qualification Requirements:

Education

Successful completion of at least PhD Evaluation 1 and 2, or equivalent. 

Experience

Classroom teaching experience through previous employment as Teaching Assistant or Course Lecturer for at least 120 hours, or equivalent. Documented research experience and recent peer-reviewed research output in semantics or pragmatics. 

Other

For current graduate students, GPA of 3.7 or higher and at least A- in LING 660 or equivalent course and in LING 465, 565 or equivalent course.
