As a valued member of the Emergency Department at Juravinski Hospital, the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) provides clinical support and direct care according to the scope and standards set out in the College of Nurses of Ontario Practice Guideline. The RPN will provide high quality nursing care to patients in collaboration with the Registered Nurse. The RPN is responsible for assessing care needs, implementing the health care plan and reporting any changes in a patient’s status. Our RPNs participate in continued education and completion and maintenance of certifications associated with the identified nursing skills and complete learning plans to achieve those goals.

Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse

Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
Recent (within 2 years) Emergency Department experience as a Registered Practical Nurse required

Current certificates or current community college studies in asepsis, wound care, airway management, complex wound care, physical assessment, urinary catheterization, administering enteral feeds, medication administration, transcribing physician orders and ECG application
Documented completion of a recognized IV administration and IV Management, Venipuncture and Blood and Blood Products Administration course

Demonstrated ability to function in working with an interdisciplinary team including nursing collaboration with Registered Nurses and other members of the health care team

Demonstrated ability to function in environments that are fast-paced and that have moderately complex care requirements

Ability to communicate (written and verbal) effectively with patients, families, and other members of the health care team

Ability to set priorities and organize work in response to patient needs

Demonstrated knowledge of transfers and lifts protocols/practices

Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse
