Overview Provides nursing care to sexual assault patients. Responsibilities * Offers kit collection options to the patient and performs a complete medical/forensic examination. Documents support as to why a step/action was not completed. * Performs and documents the medical/forensic examination on the paper chart. * Documents detailed injuries with support of photography after written consent from patient/legal guardian. * Ensures the Emergency Physician completes a medical screening exam. * Administers prophylactic medications. * Maintains chain of custody for each sexual assault exam. * Coordinates care of agencies involved in assisting the sexual assault patient and coordinates referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up. * Provides testimony as a fact witness when subpoenaed and coordinates with attorneys during the judicial process. Maintains open communication with Risk Management during judicial process proceedings. * Maintains equipment in proper working condition and exercises fiscal responsibility of unit’s resources. * Completes suspect exams upon receiving a court-ordered warrant. * Performs other duties as required or assigned. Qualifications * Graduate from an accredited Nursing Program required. * Associate of Science Degree in Nursing (ADN) required. * Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) is preferred. * Completion of approved “Sexual Assault Examiner Training” course required.
