**Job Summary and Qualifications**
The purpose of this role is to maintain a neonatal competent nurse in labor and delivery for the management and care of the newborn from birth through the first 2 hours of life. The Registered Nurse RN Neonatal Admissions will begin shift by attending safety huddle at the main nurse’s station in labor and delivery.
**What will you do in this role:**
Baby Assist:
1. Attend deliveries, as nurse is available, and function as the primary NRP-certified nurse attending to the infant.
a. If delivery is located in the OR, NAN/NICU nurse will perform skin to skin assistance as requested.
2. Provide the initial steps of NRP.
3. Support skin to skin care, after delivery.
4. Report and assign Apgar scores for 1 minute and 5 minutes of life.
5. Assure cord blood and cord segment are collected and labeled appropriately.
6. Obtain infants initial vital signs.
7. Obtain infant footprints and place bands on infant, mother, and support individual.
8. Call infant to admission and alert nursery charge nurse of infant’s delivery.
Newborn Admission:
1. Newborn assessment will begin no earlier than 45 minutes of life and no later than 1 hours 30 minutes of life.
a. If at any time infant’s care will be delayed for over 1 hours and 45 minutes after birth, obtain vital signs and administer medications to infant. Alert Nursery charge that the infant’s full head to toe assessment should be completed upon admission to MBU.
2. Scan and administer admission medications to infant.
3. Perform a head to toe assessment and document in infants EMR.
4. Assure all infant paperwork, cord clamp, and ID stickers are placed in the infant’s folder located in the front of Mom’s chart.
5. Call report to the MBU nurse who will be assuming care of the infant. If there is no nurse assigned, report should be called to nursery charge RN.
**What qualifications you will need:**
+ Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing (BSN preferred).
+ Current Registered Nurse License in Virginia or Current Multistate Compact License.
+ 1 year of nursing experience in an acute care hospital setting.
+ 1 year of neonatal care nursing experience.
+ Current American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS or BCLS) Certification.
