McMaster Children's Hospital (MCH) is part of the Hamilton Health Sciences' family of hospitals. The Pediatric Hematology Oncology Inpatient Unit (3B2) at McMaster Children’s Hospital provides specialized care for children aged 0-18 with cancer and blood disorders. 3B2 is a dynamic, fast paced unit that is committed to investing in our nurses’ professional growth and development with the goal of developing a community of specialized hematology oncology nurses who will seamlessly provide care to our patients along the phases of illness continuum.
As a member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, the Registered Nurse coordinates and evaluates patient care and provides nursing care according to the standards of practice for Registered Nurses. 3B2 provides opportunities to develop your skills and expertise and prides itself on a fast, friendly and welcoming environment with an emphasis on the wellbeing and mentorship of our nurses. On 3B2, our nurses are set up for success and go through a comprehensive onsite orientation program, led by experienced health care professionals and educators to build a foundation of oncology knowledge as well as create confidence to care for patients with cancer. Nurses are supported to achieve relevant, specialized nursing training and skills, such as central vascular access care and maintenance, chemotherapy/biotherapy certification, recognition and management of oncological emergencies, and knowledge of innovative therapies and clinical trials.

The RN provides care to patients throughout all stages of their illness and acts as a specialized resource to patients and families. The RN works with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to supports patients through assessment, treatment, and ongoing care.

Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification and ongoing re-certification mandatory
Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification or willing to complete within 6 months from hire
Current knowledge of the nursing care and disease process for children, family-centered care, family roles and structures as affected by acute and chronic illness, growth and development from infancy to adolescence, both normal and abnormal, chronic and acute illness, pain management, palliative care, and death and dying
Demonstrated skills in physical and psychosocial assessment specific to the pediatric population
Demonstrated competence in the care of the above mentioned pediatric populations including: cardiorespiratory monitoring, medication administration and other clinical skills for pediatric patients
Demonstrates knowledge, skill and ability in health teaching for pediatric patients and their families specific to the needs of the above mentioned population, including healthcare for specific diseases, procedural preparation and discharge teaching
Demonstrated excellent communication skills, both verbal and written and ability to communicate with children and their families under stressful conditions
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively within the interdisciplinary health and support team
Demonstrated leadership and delegation abilities and the ability to organize and coordinate patient and family-centered care with other members of the healthcare team
Demonstrated ongoing professional development and commitment to corporate initiatives
Demonstrated ability to adapt to rapid change in patient condition, length of stay, and workload status
Current Association of Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nursing (APHON) Biotherapy and Chemotherapy Provider Course Certification or willing to complete within 6 months from hire
