Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse (RN), Surgical Services under the general direction of the Program Director, Program Coordinators, and Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL), provides obstetrical nursing care to women and their families in the surgical services unit. Performs surgical preparation/scrub/circulating/ post anaesthesia roles for obstetrical procedures. This role encompasses maternal and fetal assessment, patient support and specialized care/emergency care, teaching, counselling, and liaising with support services to promote maternal/fetal and newborn well being.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1. In collaboration with the woman, the primary care physician/midwife and other health care providers, performs surgical preparation/scrub/circulating/post anaesthesia roles for obstetrical procedures. Prepares the woman for the surgical procedure, starts an intravenous and administers medication according to physician’s orders, completes the nursing admission form and transports the woman to the OR area prior to surgery.
2. Coordinates the in-hospital experience in collaboration with the patient, her family and the physician/midwifery team. Refers the patient to additional support services as needed e.g. physiotherapy, social services, community services, and others.
3. Creates a therapeutic perinatal environment by providing patient/family teaching and counselling, with a focus on the surgical experience and early post-operative period as well as newborn care, parenting, health promotion, and perinatal loss when appropriate. Utilizes the nursing process and the RNABC Standards of Nursing Practice and ORNAC standards to provide nursing care.
4. Provides emergency care for the surgical patient/fetus/newborn in crisis, while obtaining immediate assistance from the physician or nursing colleagues. This includes the CNL, PCE, Program Coordinator, and Anesthesiologist.
5. Evaluates outcome of care on continuing basis by ongoing assessments. Provides and then modifies the care plan accordingly. Acts as a patient advocate.
6. Promotes quality assurance and risk management activities by participating in patient surveys.
7. Participates by providing input and feedback in the development and revision of departmental and hospital policies in collaboration with the Program Coordinator, CNL, and Perinatal Clinical Educator (PCE).
8. Provides guidance and/or direction by preceptoring new orientees or students and providing care to women and their families.
9. Responsible for personal and professional development and provides a nursing perspective by attending multidisciplinary/nursing inservices, rounds, conferences, and committee meetings.
10. Supports research by providing information on research projects or by enrolling participants.
11. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
• Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
• Two years of recent perinatal nursing experience which includes 1 year in LDR or equivalent combination of experience and education.
• Certification/diploma OR/PAR course, e.g. BCIT, St. Paul’s.
• BC Women’s OR/PAR course.
• Fetal Health Assessment Certification (BC Women’s or equivalent).
• Current CPR /Newborn Resuscitation Certification.
• Breastfeeding update, minimum 6 hours in the last 2 years.
• Perinatal loss education, minimum 4 hours.
