The Registered Nurse’s responsibilities in Radiation Oncology include assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care for a complex patient population. The RN provides patient and family education, psychosocial and emotional support, and functions as a member of a multidisciplinary care team. This role requires clinical expertise, critical thinking, collaborative practice, excellent communication skills, and an understanding of clinical research principles. Major Responsibilities:
Patient Care and Clinical Practice
1. Implements the nursing process: assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care.
2. Administers medications and performs procedures safely and efficiently.
3. Educates patients and families about disease, treatment, and care plans.
4. Responds to emergencies and maintains BLS certification.
5. Identifies and refers to appropriate community resources.
6. Complies with professional nursing standards and licensure requirements.
Patient and Family Interaction
1. Establishes rapport with patients and families from diverse backgrounds.
2. Demonstrates compassion, respect, and cultural sensitivity.
3. Provides age-specific care and support.

II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education
Required:
1. Graduate of an NLN or CCE accredited school of nursing
2. Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
3. Current CPR certification
Preferred:
1. BSN
2. Certification in Oncology Nursing (OCN, AOCN, or CPON)
Experience/Skills
Required:
1. Minimum of 2 years recent experience as an RN in radiation oncology
2. Demonstrated ability to work as an effective member of an interdisciplinary team
3. Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent decision-making skills
4. Ability to function in a busy setting with complex patient needs
Preferred:
1. Oncology specialty experience
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
