Responsibilities Summary: The Registered Nurse (RN), Quality Assurance (QA) Supervisor evaluates and provides comprehensive nursing care in a correctional setting while observing and maintaining the requirements of security. Performs quality improvement activities in the daily operations in Health Services. The RN, Quality Assurance Supervisor performs the duties of the department as described below in accordance with current applicable federal, state and local standards and regulations. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: The RN, QA Supervisor maintains a good working relationship with correctional personnel, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside provider agencies. The Nursing Supervisor utilizes established corporate and correctional policies and procedures in making decisions. Monitors staff compliance with facility policies and unit directives by counseling employees who violate policies established by the company or the facility, after consultation with management. Ensures the proper flow of relevant information (policies, procedures, in-service, problems, etc.) to supervisor and supervised personnel. Monitors and ensures strict staff compliance with all applicable pharmacy laws and client standards. Organizes education/training and ensures that staff receive necessary training related to corrective action plans. The RN, QA Supervisor assists with inquiries by outside agencies during audits or reviews. Assists in the development of processes and procedures to ensure quality patient services and compliance of professional standards. The RN, QA Supervisor consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans. Analyzes and monitors performance data to determine trends to reduce costs and improve patient services. The RN, QA Supervisor identifies opportunities for improvement, understands work processes, identifies the root causes of variation, develops feasible change options, implements the changes, measures the impact or result of improvements, and makes recommendations to maintain or make further enhancements. Identifies and assists in resolving areas of non-compliance and facilitates improvement and integration of standards into work processes and systems. The RN, QA Supervisor measures the impact of improvement initiatives. Ensures the improvement activities are documented and reported within the organization and externally as appropriate. The RN, QA Supervisor applies and appropriately uses performance enhancing tools in support of the improvement process (cause-effect diagrams, flow charts, brainstorming), problem analysis and measurement. Plans and organizes quality control programs and activities. The RN, QA Supervisor provides recommendations and reports to management, as necessary/required, concerning quality control programs and processes. Ensures that detainees/inmates arriving at the facility are adequately oriented to services available and procedure for obtaining medical services. The RN, QA Supervisor ensures that all detainees assigned to work as medical orderlies are trained in the handling of contaminated waste and proper cleaning of contaminated surfaces. Monitors their compliance with instructions. Performs random audits of medical records, logs, sharps, narcotic counts, outside referrals and sick call, etc. Counsel employees or provide in-service for noted errors. All findings shall be submitted to the management for review and recommendations. The RN, QA Supervisor coordinates, participates and oversees the quality assurance activities. Makes recommendations for monitoring needs and plans activities for correcting deficiencies. Reports problem areas in writing to management. Monitors informal grievances from detainees for trends, analysis and possible improvement purposes. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum Requirements: Associate’s or Bachelor's degree from an approved program; graduate of an accredited school of nursing required. Must have a current, unrestricted license to practice as Registered Nurse in the state the facility is located. Maintains a current copy of license on file at the facility at all times. Two (2) years of direct work experience preferred. Supervisory experience and competence in performance of the following services: crisis intervention, medical emergencies, physical assessment, medical nursing care, and psychiatric nursing care preferred. Must have the ability to work without direct, immediate supervision in performing nursing diagnosis, and be able provide appropriate follow through treatment. Must possess an active, valid driver's license. Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age or older. Must be a United States Citizen. Must pass a background check and drug screen.
