Grand River Insurance Agency LLC (a multi-line, growing Commercial Lines Managing General Underwriter) is seeking a remote Regional Vice President that will be accountable for the management and execution of our business strategy for the state of Michigan. At the present time, the territory is comprised of 75 appointed agencies and an annual premium volume of $40 million.

Reporting directly to the President of FC Capital, this position entails comprehensive Field Operations responsibilities with accountability for premium growth, loss ratio, growth and management of the Michigan agency plant, and supervision and professional development of the Michigan Account Executive staff.

This position will focus on enhancing the Grand River model of providing the highest level of personalized service by taking pride in being part of a problem-solving team.

Job Accountabilities

Responsible for achieving targeted performance metrics regarding written premium, new
business premium, loss ratio, renewal retention, account pricing, and customer service. Within delegated Grant of Underwriting Authority, ensures the application of sound underwriting judgement for risk selection and pricing wholly consistent with corporate underwriting philosophy and strategies. Actively counsels and shepherds Account Executives with the acquisition and retention of large accounts, particularly those >$100,000 in annual premium. Supervises, trains, and motivates a staff of 6 Account Executives with full accountability for performance management. Participates with the interviewing and onboarding of new Account Executive hires. Conducts periodic review of in-force account portfolio to identify negative loss trends, problematic business segments, and chronically unprofitable agencies and takes appropriate actions. Performs periodic Underwriting self-audits to validate underwriting performance and the integrity of the account portfolio. Actively participates in the annual business planning and budgeting process. Must effectively interface across a wide matrix of other corporate staff (including Claims, Actuarial, Accounting, and other departments). Vigorously supports the expansion initiatives of other FCC program platforms (Bridge Excess, Stone Falls). Responsible for all aspects of daily agency management including new agency appointments, agency terminations, annual agency reviews, and annual agency business planning. Identifies and recommends solutions for new product development opportunities. With a strong executive presence, routinely maintains a high degree of visibility and engagement with key agency principals and producers. Successfully manage business development within an assigned territory by partnering with existing agents and appointing new ones to acquire and retain profitable new accounts, while securing better penetration with winning agents. Develops relationships with key trading partners, leads joint planning initiatives and builds strong partnerships. Conduct regular sales calls to Agency partners to execute defined plans, measure progress and achieve established company standards. Traveling with the local underwriting team to various association meetings and Agency visits. Serving as liaison with underwriting team to maintain open communication for continued growth and development opportunities in the state. Assisting and handling any Agency management projects for the territory. Meet with Agency principals to have Agency economic conversations that advance deeper partnerships while also meeting with Account Managers to increase engagement and commitment to Grand River. Partner with management to influence and execute a territory strategy and production plan that addresses product, pricing, and distribution needs to meet goals in a competitive marketplace. Collaborates, influences, and supports internal business partners (underwriting/product management/claims/risk control) to identify opportunities, solve problems, share industry intel and provide a voice for our agents. Monitors progress of agency plans and performance and shares status with the branch team. Adjusts plan provisions as appropriate to achieve desired outcomes. Work closely with agents and brokers to drive flow of small commercial business. Manages branch rehabilitation efforts of underperforming agencies and recommends agency terminations when appropriate. Holds others accountable for mutually beneficial outcomes. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Core Competencies

Must be based in Ohio or Pennsylvania Minimum of 10 years managing Agency relationships in a commercial P&C environment. 10 years of commercial underwriting knowledge. Professional industry designations highly preferred. Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Highly effective written and oral communication skills, including presentation, persuasion, timing, tact, and negotiation skills. Strong time management and team orientation skills. Must be comfortable and self-directed to work independently in a remote environment. Exceptional desk management skills required. Heavy-to-moderate travel required for Agency visits and other company functions. Valid driver’s license required. Michigan residency is required.
