About this position:
Manages the overall operation of South Coast Botanic Garden in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
Unique from the start, the South Coast Botanic Garden is one of the world’s first botanic garden to be developed over a sanitary landfill. The Garden is a masterpiece of creative land reclamation and environment improvement for all to share. It is a living testimonial to the fact that land reclamation not only offers a practical solution to refuse disposal problems but also beautifies and improves land values at the same time.
Essential Job Functions
+ Supervises, through subordinate supervisors, educational nature-related programming, including planting, propagation, and maintenance operations.
+ Supervises the work of garden staff, volunteers, and grounds maintenance contractors.
+ Coordinates and supervises work assignments and work shifts for all facility personnel, contractors and volunteers.
+ Regularly inspects the facility to assure optimum maintenance and use of buildings, grounds, gardens, hiking and equestrian trails, and water areas; and reports deficiencies to appropriate agency.
+ Maintains working collaborations with other County departments, governmental agencies, support groups, and other organizations which provide services to or have a special interest in the facility.
+ Processes and approves special event permits, coordinating pre-event preparation of the area to be used and assuring cleaning of the area after the event.
+ Ensures compliance by concessionaires and contractors with negotiated terms of contracts; and reports violations to the appropriate departmental agency.
+ Identifies, plans, budgets, and oversees the execution of restoration projects for gardens, and associated elements, such as hardscape and garden statuary.
+ Maintains an inventory of both living and non-living collections, and ensures artifacts are protected and secured from damage or theft.
+ Participates in the planning of future development or additions to the facility; and attends meetings with community organizations, private contractors, or other agencies involved with planning and developing the facility.
+ Prepares or supervises the preparation of maintenance of records, reports, budgets, and fee collection systems.
+ Coordinates facility programs related to horticulture, nature and equestrian activities.
+ Trains staff and volunteers to assist with programs.
+ Works with stakeholders, such as staff within the Board of Supervisors and volunteer organizations on facility operations and programs.
Requirements
SPECIALTY REQUIREMENTS:
A Bachelor’s degree* from an accredited college or university in Plant Science, Environmental Studies, Landscape Architecture, Arboriculture, or related fields– AND – One year of experience supervising staff and managing a nature center or arboreta garden.
+ Qualifying experience may be substituted for a Bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.
LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
PHYSICAL CLASS:
2 - Light. This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This assessment type will evaluate the experience you list on a questionnaire and assign a score based on a standardized scoring system.
+ This assessment is worth 100% of your total score.
+ The passing score for the assessment is 70%.

ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION:
Candidates who passed the assessment are placed on an eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months.
The eligible register resulting from this examination will be used to fill the vacancy at the South Coast Botanic Garden in the Department of Parks and Recreation.
