Job Title: Railcar Technician

Type: Contract
Compensation: $30 - $35 hourly
Contractor Work Model: Onsite

  Job Summary:

We are seeking a mechanically inclined and safety-focused Passenger Railcar Technician to inspect, maintain, and repair structural and mechanical systems on passenger railcars. This role emphasizes hands-on work with undercarriage components such as brake systems, couplers, running gear, and suspension. The ideal candidate will have experience working with heavy vehicles or railcars and a strong commitment to safety, quality, and reliability.

Key Responsibilities:

Perform inspections and mechanical repairs on undercarriage components, including brakes, draft gear, couplers, suspension, and wheel assemblies.

Conduct scheduled preventative maintenance and corrective repairs on passenger railcars in accordance with FRA and company standards.

Inspect and service air brake systems, including reservoirs, valves, piping, and rigging.

Replace worn or damaged structural components (e.g., bolsters, side sills, end frames) using appropriate tools and fabrication techniques.

Operate jacks, lifts, and other equipment to remove or replace wheelsets, trucks, and other heavy components.

Document inspection findings, repair work, and parts usage accurately using maintenance tracking systems.

Assist in wheel gauging, alignment, and wheelset replacement operations.

Follow all safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, fall protection, and PPE compliance.

Support yard moves and shop activities as needed to position railcars for inspection or repair.

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED.

2+ years of experience with mechanical repair or maintenance, preferably in rail, heavy equipment, or transportation.

Knowledge of FRA regulations, particularly Part 238 (Passenger Equipment Safety Standards).

Proficient in using hand tools, pneumatic tools, torches, grinders, and hydraulic equipment.

Strong understanding of mechanical systems, including braking and suspension components.

Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, work under railcars, and operate in confined or elevated spaces.

Ability to read blueprints, maintenance manuals, and mechanical diagrams.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience working on passenger railcars or freight cars.

Familiarity with air brake systems and APTA mechanical standards.

Welding or metal fabrication skills are a plus.

Certification in railcar mechanical inspection or repair.

Work Conditions:

Work is performed in shop and outdoor yard environments, subject to noise, dust, weather, and moving equipment.

Requires physical endurance and adherence to strict safety protocols.

Shifts may include evenings, weekends, and holidays depending on operational needs.
