This position exists to promote and protect the radiological health and safety of the public, the health and safety of employees, and the safety of the environment by ensuring compliance with Minnesota Rules, obtaining prompt correction of violations and adverse conditions that may affect radiological safety, deterring future occurrences of conditions adverse to quality, encouraging the prompt identification and reporting of potential safety problems, and promoting improvement of the regulated entity's performance and, by example, that of the industry.
Responsibilities include:
+ Complete training for Agreement State Inspector/License Reviewer.
+ Determine compliance with State regulations by performing routine and special radiation safety inspections of radiological programs using radioactive materials or accelerators and prepare written reports for inspections conducted.
+ Prepare licensing and registration documents.
+ Participate as a member of the Radiation Emergency Response Team to assist in preventing unnecessary radiation exposure to the public.
+ Perform environmental monitoring for radioactivity.
+ Maintain equipment for inspections and response.
This position is eligible for telework up to 50% of the time and will be based out of the St. Paul office. Occasional travel is expected. The Radiation Protection Specialist travels to inspections throughout Minnesota that require occasional overnight stays. In addition, there are required training courses out of state that require travel on weekends and evenings. The courses may be held Monday morning through Friday afternoon, and travel may be required Sunday and Friday evening. Reimbursement for authorized business travel expenses is provided according to bargaining unit guidelines.
**Minimum Qualifications**

Two (2) years of experience in a scientific, engineering, environmental, or regulatory health or safety enforcement position.
**Minimum qualifications to be assessed during the interview process:**
+ Ability to make routine computations involving the application of health physics and radiological safety techniques.
+ Ability to organize, execute, and evaluate programmatic activities, analyze and interpret data, and summarize findings.
+ Communication skills, including writing, training development, and public speaking.
**Degree Equivalencies**
A related associate degree may be substituted for six (6) months of experience. A related bachelor's degree may be substituted for one (1) year of experience. A related master's degree may be substituted for one and a half (1.5) years of experience. A related doctorate degree may be substituted for two (2) years of experience.
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ Bachelor's degree in health physics, nuclear physics, engineering, or physical, natural, or biological science.
+ Knowledge of the principles and practices of health physics and radiation safety and applicable health laws, rules, and regulations.
+ Technical knowledge in the following: safety, risk management, risk communication, regulations, analytical chemistry, radiation chemistry, and hazardous wastes.
+ Ability to develop routine technical reports of investigations and duties.
+ Ability to interpret programs to individuals, officials, and special interest groups.
**Physical Requirements**
+ Occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds.
+ Ability to work in indoor and outdoor locations that may include bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing stairs and ladders, navigating around objects, and traveling on uneven surfaces.
**Additional Requirements**
This position does not require a valid driver's license, but it does demand occasional travel which the candidate will be responsible for meeting.
