R&D Technician

As an R&D Technician, you’ll be running processes, manufacturing advanced materials, maintaining equipment and safety standards. The R&D Technician will work very closely with our Samples Plant Senior Chemist, gaining valuable experience and contributing directly to the development and industrialisation of next generation catalysts.

Johnson Matthey Precious Group Metal Services (PGMS) Technical has entered an exciting and important new Research & Development phase in Royston UK with the commissioning of our flagship laboratory — “the Samples Plant”. The Samples Plant is a state-of-the-art mini-factory featuring 2-20L thermoregulated glass-jacketed process vessels along with equipment for washing, filtration, drying, milling and furnace operations. The facility is engineered for flexibility, precision, and innovation.

This role would welcome someone with a background/qualifications in chemistry, with lab-based experience.

The role:

As a Plant Technician, you will help drive our goals by:

Manufacturing fuel cell catalysts, electrolysers and other inorganic products for Hydrogen Technologies and external customers.

Adhering to the manufacturing schedule, regularly update on progress and provide feedback on any potential clash on resources or roadblocks.

Monitoring and collect process and product data generated by the Samples Plant.

Undertaking the supporting activities expected in a manufacturing facility, such as ordering raw materials, monitoring inventory, controlling precious metal, processing orders and transferring products for shipment.  

Identifying and propose opportunities for improvements and efficiencies, and lead the implementation of the agreed solutions.

Proactively maintain Samples Plant to prevent breakdowns and identify workaround options and arrange repairs when necessary.

Key skills/qualifications that will help you succeed in this role:

Practical experience of using chemicals in a laboratory or a manufacturing environment.

A university degree in Chemistry or a related scientific field OR a school or college qualification in science followed by a period of training and experience in a laboratory or a manufacturing setting.

Ability to distil complicated situations or solutions into clear and simple summaries for technical or non-technical colleagues and stakeholders.
