We’re looking for a dynamic individual to lead the Quality function at our Tunstead plant in Buxton. In this pivotal role, you’ll manage the site’s quality systems, ensure compliance with industry standards, and promote a culture of continuous improvement and safety. Working closely with the Plant Management Team, you’ll drive operational excellence and deliver high-quality products that meet customer and site expectations.
Key Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include:
Promoting health, safety, and environmental awareness across the team, driving a zero-harm cultureLeading the operation and development of the Quality Management System, ensuring certification, compliance, and reporting standards are metMonitoring quality KPIs and product conformity, initiating corrective actions where requiredOverseeing sampling, lab testing, and analysis processes by technical standardsEnsuring the timely production and communication of Autocontrol Quality Data to support sales and customer needsInvestigating quality issues and coordinating effective action plansSupporting the introduction of new equipment and procedures, ensuring safety and quality complianceCollaborating with technical and commercial teams to manage customer queries and claimsLeading and mentoring the laboratory team, supporting recruitment, development, and performance reviewsManaging quality, chemistry, and environmental projects that drive improvement and standardisationEnsuring laboratory staff are fully trained and competent within ISO and internal quality systems
What We’re Looking For
To succeed in this role, you’ll need:
A Chemistry or Materials Science-related degree (or equivalent)Significant experience in a technical, optimisation, or quality management role, ideally within the cement or heavy materials industryDeep knowledge of cement processes, including raw mix design, clinker production, and finished product grindingStrong understanding of physico-chemical testing, QA systems, and certificationsFamiliarity with standards including ISO9001, BS EN197, and systems such as Tech-Base and LQTSExperience with laboratory procedures and data managementA track record of leading change and process improvementsAnalytical skills with the ability to produce clear, structured reportsStrong coaching and influencing abilitiesIOSH certification or formal leadership training would be an advantage

This role is based at our Tunstead site in Buxton, Derbyshire, easily accessible from Macclesfield, Sheffield, Chesterfield, Stockport, and surrounding areas.

Fostering safety awareness amongst employees, striving to achieve a zero-harm culture, leading by example and by setting high standards towards creating a sustainable Health & Safety culture coupled with Environmental excellenceComplying with the Company environmental standards in the relevant fields of activityEnsuring the quality of products and services are in line with objectives, quality contracts and standards, and any process improvement work is relevant and of good qualityLeading daily reviews of Quality KPI’s & Product conformity, setting in place key actions for any deviationsOperating a Quality Management System, ensuring certification of products, operational testing, monitoring and reporting as well as maintaining Quality complianceEnsuring sampling, measuring and analysis procedures (including Tarmac quality technical standards) are in place, adequate and respectedProviding prompt production of Autocontrol Quality Data as required by the sales function and customersPromoting quality of work and motivating personnel, developing skills to keep abreast of technical developmentsEvaluating the suitability of new plant together with safe procedures for their use that ensure conformity to legislation and Tarmac Management SystemInvestigating product quality issues, putting in place corrective actions with a corresponding action planLiaising with the technical sales force and NCTM in case of quality claimsManaging chemistry/quality/environment projects to carry out improvements and standardization and coordinating certification proceduresEnsuring that all laboratory personnel are fully trained and competent in the Quality management system and the ISO Quality Management system Providing line manager support including, recruitment, retention, development opportunities and appraisals for your team The Ideal CandidateThe ideal Quality Manager will possess the following;
Significant experience in a technical/optimisation/quality management role with experience of laboratory testing proceduresExtensive knowledge of cement industry processes from raw mix design, clinker production (burning) to finished products grindingIn-depth knowledge of physico-chemical characteristics of raw materials, in process and finishedFully conversant with laboratory sample and recording systems in a cement/concrete or related-product laboratoryExperience of managing change and implementing new processes and proceduresA sound knowledge of standards and QA certification proceduresFully conversant with ISO9001 quality management system, BS EN197, Tech-Base and LQTSIn-depth working knowledge of cement products is essentialAnalytical thinking, able to analyse data and compile logical, structured reportsGood time-management skills; with ability to meet strict deadlinesCoaching and Influencing skills are paramount in this roleSuitable candidates for the Quality Manager role will hold a Chemistry/Materials Science related degree (or equivalent) whilst IOSH and Management or leadership certification would be desirable.
