About our Team

The Science, Technology, and Medical Journals (STMJ) team at Elsevier is dedicated to making our journals a premier destination for authors. We collaborate with researchers to facilitate the publication of their impactful scientific discoveries, with a focus on rigorous peer review, ethics, and research integrity. In support of our portfolio of 2700+ hybrid and open access scientific journals, you will actively contribute to advancing science, improving health outcomes.

The Health and Medical Sciences (HMS) portfolio, includes over 1000 journals across various medical specialties predominantly around surgery and dental science. We support and collaborate with editors, authors, reviewers and researchers worldwide, as well as supporting a large number of high-profile journals that are owned by medical societies and associations.

About the Role

As Publishing Director in HMS you will be the publishing voice on one specific overarching STMJ strategic initiative and implementation plan. You will lead a team of Publishers who manage journals with a focus on strategic planning, portfolio development, financial performance, and fostering strong relationships with external and internal stakeholders, and on developing your team.

Responsibilities

Drive strategies and implementation plans for priority strategic initiatives that fulfil STMJ goals;

Lead a team of publishers to ensure specific journal plans fulfil overall PMG goals, the growth and development of each team member, and a psychologically safe and inclusive working environment;

Lead strategic planning & portfolio development and financial performance at the PMG level by collaborating with strategy, marketing, society, finance, and sales;

Lead PMG relationship building efforts by maintaining a network within the research community, engaging in high-level industry discussions and guiding team members in building their networks and translating customer trends into innovative strategies;

Lead daily operations management of the PMG by resolving escalated issues and supporting publishers in engaging with colleagues across STMJ and Operations.

Requirements

Have relevant publishing experience with a deep understanding of journal development, and with strong knowledge of the global publishing industry and related research/policy drivers;

Have demonstrated acumen in data driven decision making, driving strategic initiative goals including commercial goals by participating in budget planning cycle, and achieving KPIs within the agreed upon budget;

Have proficiency in enabling winning teams by managing change, facilitating a growth mindset and a psychologically safe environment, and improving your leadership based on feedback from EOS and Officevibe;

Have demonstrated strategic and innovative thinking in developing business strategies and new opportunities;

Have proven ability to build high-level contacts within the scientific community and translate customer needs into strategic actions;

Have impactful communication and presentation skills, the ability to influence in a matrix organization and interact effectively with people in all roles at all levels;

Have the ability to think enterprise wide, both at the big picture level and with great attention to detail;

You embrace curiosity and collaborate across barriers in function, culture and approach.
