Provides both primary and specialty medical services in a University Health Sciences hospital unit. This individual will function broadly within the specialty of Obstetrics & Gynecology, caring primarily for pregnant patients that present for unscheduled triage visits to OB Emergency Services. * Works with attendings, residents, nurses, CNM / WHNP /medical students, health care assistants and unlicensed support staff. * Works closely with the inpatient Labor and Delivery team regarding patient health care plans and treatment. * Orders, interprets, and evaluates labs and diagnostic tests to identify and assess the patient’s clinical problems and health care needs. * Performs selected invasive procedures for therapeutic and/or diagnostic reasons within scope of validated competence. * Initiates and/or recommends medical drug therapies or other forms of related therapeutic treatment and procedures in accordance with approved protocols/policy. * Counsels patients, families and significant others about health and illness, and promotes health maintenance. * Evaluates, plans, implements, and re-evaluates the care of individuals requiring emergency measures. * Complies with medical records policies regarding the complete and accurate documentation of patient care. * Initiates and maintains required records and legal documents. * Participates in quality improvement activities. Contact: olivia.ehrler@hsc.utah.edu **Responsibilities** Essential Functions Administers controlled drugs, intravenous solutions, antibiotics, and other agents used to treat medical problems. Anticipates and recognizes deviations from normal infant deliveries and institutes procedures designed to safeguard the well-being of mothers and babies, such as resuscitation of newborns, treatment of hemorrhage and shock, fetal distress, prolapsed cord, and other life threatening conditions. Performs spontaneous vaginal deliveries and episiotomies and consults with a physician when complications occur. Develops, implements, and evaluates broad program goals, objectives, and standards for the provision of health care to childbearing families. Designs and participates in research that is relevant to health care needs of patients, their families, and the community. Teaches prenatal classes for expectant parents to help ensure the safe pregnancy and delivery of the patients. Manages the care of newborns and infants by providing comprehensive primary health care maintenance through home visits or clinic consultation. Records the patient’s medical, obstetrical, family, socioeconomic, and dietary history in order to monitor the progress of patient’s health status. Problem Solving Demonstrated potential ability to perform the essential functions as outlined above. Ability to provide care to the population served. Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual. Demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communication skills. Demonstrated clinical competence and in-depth knowledge of specialty area. Demonstrated teaching and research skills. **Minimum Qualifications** Required Current licensure to practice as a Certified Nurse Midwife in the State of Utah. Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card through American Heart Association, or obtain within one month of hire, as determined by credentialing. Preferred Utah State prescriptive privileges. National certification as a Nurse Midwife. This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
