Protection and Control Applications Engineer
**Application Engineer - System Protection and Control** **JOB SUMMARY** This job exists at Mississippi Power Company to provide for the protection and reliable operation of the transmission & distribution systems. This position will be responsible for the calculation & application of power system protective equipment settings and protection schemes on the Mississippi Power transmission & distribution systems. The selected candidate will provide technical expertise and support for design, construction, planning, marketing and customers regarding protection and control of Mississippi Power's transmission and distribution facilities. **JOB REQUIREMENTS** **Education Requirements** + A Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering is required + Previous experience in transmission or distribution power system protection devices OR calculation & application of power system protective equipment settings. **Experience Requirements** + Basic understanding of protective relay & utility control circuits is desired. + Previous exposure to transmission protective relay coordination and the development of protective relay settings is desired. + Experience in transmission and/or distribution substation operations, power delivery, and/or substation control design engineering is a plus + Previous field experience with commissioning, testing and/or troubleshooting of protective relays and/or schemes is highly recommended **Knowledge, Skills & Abilities** + The successful candidate should be knowledgeable in the use of electrical test equipment and have sufficient mathematical background to work with three-phase power, voltages, currents and phase angles + Experience working with CAPE (Computer Aided Protection Engineering), CYME, or other related power system simulation software programs + Strong computer skills and be able to investigate & test electrical protection & control systems + Must work well in a team environment and exhibit good communication skills (both oral & written) + Proven troubleshooting skills + Must be customer focused; self-directed and highly motivated; able to contribute within a team environment as well as work alone + Must be able to manage multiple tasks in an ever-changing environment + Must be able to meet deadlines + Electrical blueprint/schematic reading **JOB RESPONSIBILITIES** + Design protective relay & control schemes and develop protective relay settings to protect and monitor the performance of electric power system facilities (transmission lines, distribution feeders, and substation equipment). + Support Substation construction and maintenance projects and provide technical assistance to other functional areas. + Review transmission system operations with emphasis on microprocessor relay event analysis. + Investigate incorrect and questionable operations of substation protective relay & control schemes + Support the integration of the System Protection and Control department through cross training and job shadowing **Some overnight travel will be required as well as occasional weekend work** **Job Experience and Education** **Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities** The successful candidate should understand electrical and power system theory, have sufficient mathematical background to work with three-phase power, voltages, currents and phase angles.
