Project Manager, Department of Environmental Sciences

Department Overview

The Department of Environmental Sciences in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences is seeking a Project Manager for 32 hours/week, to join the Environmental Institute Climate Collaborative project on Arctic, Snow, Water, and Permafrost Management.  The start date for the position will be Sept. 1, 2025; this will be a one-year contract with the potential for renewal for up to three years.

Position Summary

The project manager will be responsible for many administrative aspects of the project for the research team, including fieldwork logistics, organization of meetings, communications (email, newsletter, website), data management, budget management, and liaison among project participants (academic researchers, agency and private contractors, community collaborators).  See details below:

Responsibilities

Coordinate field logistics – organize project team field trips to Utqiaġvik, Alaska, with respect to travel, lodging, vehicle rental, lab rental, permitting, etc.Organize regular project team meetings – organize monthly project team meetings, with academic, agency, private, and community collaboratorsPlan and implement annual full team meetings in Utqiaġvik, AlaskaFacilitate interactions between researchers and community partnersManage project communications, such as project calendar and email listsFoster communications from the project to broader audiences, e.g. project newsletterDevelop and maintain a project websiteConduct data management and archiving
 

Minimum Qualifications

Education:  High School Diploma, Bachelor's Degree Preferred             

Experience:  5 years relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s DegreeExperience: At least 3 years managing multi-disciplinary, multi-organization, Arctic research projects, preferably those working with Arctic community partners.Skills: Data management, website development, and group communications software

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

The project manager may on occasion accompany the project team to field sites (e.g. Utqiaġvik, Alaska), which would require tolerance of harsh weather conditions, and long daylight or darkness hours.

Funding Details

This is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability.This position has a term limit of 1 year after which continued employment will depend on department needs and funding.

Work Arrangement

This position can be fully remote and may be performed outside of Charlottesville, VA, in alignment with UVA’s remote work guidelines.
