Production Manager, MSNBC Newsgathering

Comcast NBCUniversal has announced its intent to create a new publicly traded company ('Versant') comprised of most of NBCUniversal's cable television networks, including USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and Golf Channel along with complementary digital assets Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow, GolfPass, and SportsEngine. The well-capitalized company will have significant scale as a pure-play set of assets anchored by leading news, sports and entertainment content. The spin-off is expected to be completed during 2025. The Production Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing all technical and logistical aspects of high-profile news and special events coverage across the network. This includes breaking news, major political events (primaries, conventions, debates, election night), presidential or high-profile funerals, state ceremonies, sporting event coverage, and cultural milestones such as award shows. The candidate must have deep knowledge and experience in managing remote site production, supervising crews, coordinating vendors and facilities, and ensuring flawless execution of live broadcasts across multiple platforms. This role is pivotal in bridging editorial, engineering, operations, and production teams. Key Responsibilities: Pre-Production Planning: + Serve as point of contact for all logistical planning with organizers, host venues, unions, and third-party vendors. + Conduct technical site surveys in advance to determine infrastructure needs (power, cabling, risers, fiber, RF, etc.). + Secure and manage broadcast positions including skyboxes, studio setups, camera platforms, standup positions, and workspace. + Work with editorial teams to ensure all production elements meet show needs and timelines. On-Site Operations Management: + Oversee load-in, setup, and teardown of remote production facilities, including control rooms, studios, and transmission paths. + Coordinate day-to-day operations for all production personnel including stage managers, camera operators, audio engineers, and utility staff. + Serve as liaison between technical crew and editorial team during rehearsals and live broadcasts. + Troubleshoot and resolve technical or logistical issues quickly and efficiently. Budget & Vendor Coordination: + Track and manage production budgets, expense reports, and vendor contracts in partnership with finance and legal departments. + Procure and coordinate technical equipment rentals, satellite trucks, studio lighting, and scenic elements. + Manage credentialing and access control for network staff and contractors. Health, Safety & Compliance: + Ensure all production activities adhere to safety standards, union regulations, and network policies. + Implement contingency plans for emergencies, inclement weather, or technical failures. + At least 7 years of experience in television or live event production, preferably in special event coverage. + Demonstrated experience managing large-scale remote productions, especially political or major media events. + Strong technical knowledge of control rooms, RF systems, fiber transmission, camera setups, and live broadcast workflows. + Skilled in logistics coordination, vendor management, and union environments (e.g., IATSE, NABET). + Excellent communication, negotiation, and organizational skills. + Ability to thrive under pressure and adapt in fast-paced, unpredictable environments. + Proficient in production scheduling tools, budgeting software, and newsroom systems (iNews, ENPS, ScheduALL, etc.). Preferred Qualifications: + Experience with past Republican or Democratic National Conventions, debate and election night coverage, or other high-profile events. + Familiarity with remote production technologies (REMI workflows, bonded cellular, IP-based broadcast systems). + Experience working in broadcast trucks and temporary broadcast facilities. + OSHA card, PMP, or similar certification a plus.
