NOTE: This role is based in the NYC office and requires being in the NY Soho office three days per week.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Production Editor organizes and oversees the accurate and timely production of Scholastic classroom magazines from layout through prepress and then on to digital implementation. The role involves close work in InDesign layouts ensuring design accuracy, consistent formatting, and adherence to established department styles; trafficking assets; preparing layout files for press and digital publishing. The Production Editor works closely with editorial, art, photo, and digital teams to meet exacting quality standards and on-time delivery.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Organize issues within the WoodWing publishing system; upload layouts and create articles; route issues to Art, Editorial, and Copy Desk
Flow copy into magazine layouts; make editorial and art corrections; request and place photo credits; create layouts and flow text for teacher’s editions and skills sheets; create simple graphs and diagrams
Inspect, troubleshoot, and prepare layouts for conversion to press-ready PDFs; deliver pdfs to press and do final approvals for printing
Traffic print and digital assets; manage the quality control to ensure adherence to file naming protocols, folder structures, printer specs,
font standards, and stylesheets; keep templates up-to-date
Upload online content and build web pages
Archive all print and online files

QualificationsHOW YOU CAN FIT (Qualifications)
Expert working knowledge of Adobe InDesign. This includes all aspects of working in layouts for desktop publishing: building and formatting pages, creating and using style sheets, importing and styling text, importing images, making layout adjustments; pre-flighting files to identify possible printing issues
Knowledge and understanding of desktop publishing printing process. This includes understanding pre-press requirements: bleed, crop marks, image resolution, 4-color process
Ability to clearly communicate workflow priorities and effectively oversee and meet deadlines
Must be able to balance multiple projects and work across many departments
Must bring exceptional attention to detail
Knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat
Knowledge of WoodWing (publishing workflow system) a plus
Knowledge of Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) a plus
Working knowledge of Excel and Word
Experience: 3-5 years’ experience in a similar position at a magazine or other publishing environment
Education: BA or higher
