The Core Vehicle Structural Systems (Body Structures, Frames and Battery Tray sheetmetal) organization at Ford Motor Company is seeking an employee to work as a Core Mechanical Joining Engineer, specializing in Body Structure and Sheetmetal Mechanical Joining. As a Core Mechanical Joining Subject Matter Expert (SME), the engineer will author and maintain Joining Standards and Quality documents (DFMEA, Control Plans), Engineering Specifications, and Requirements (such as Design Rules) for use by the Program Application teams. The engineer will also work as part of a cross-functional team to develop new mechanical joining technologies to support the Structural Systems Team. Mechanical Joining includes but is not limited to: Flow Drill Screws (FDS), Clinching, Self-Piercing Rivets (SPR), and Friction Element Welding (FEW). This role also includes leading and to our Mechanical Joining Lab to assess joint feasibility on future programs, new joint stack-ups (Gage/Grade/Materials), Cost Improvement actions, and ongoing production issues.

M.S. in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related physical science field of study. 10+ years as a Joining Engineer or similar experience. Multiple automotive launches. Self-starter. Ability to work effectively with little oversight. Team player. Understands collaboration and delivering assignments as part of a cross-functional team. Hands on engineer. Strong problem-solving skills. Ability to analyze and interpret data. Experience launching adhesives and sealers. Excellent communication skills. This position is a range of salary grades 6-8.
Ford will not be offering a relocation package for this position. Candidates for this role are expected to either reside within commuting distance of our Dearborn, MI office or be able to relocate independently without financial assistance from the company.

What you'll do...
Author Design Rules, Engineering Specifications, and update these documents as required. Work with Product Development Structures and Closures teams to develop feasible joints for the different programs. Coordinate joint feasibility testing with manufacturing and suppliers with test labs. Sign-off on joint feasibility testing results. “Go to” SME for Product Development team for mechanical joining. Collaborate as part of a cross-functional team including Research, Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Suppliers in developing and implementing new mechanical joining processes in Ford. Lead/participate in solving production issues with VO, Materials, STA, and Purchasing. These include and are not limited to: Stop-Ships, Field Service Actions, Warranty, Material Shortages. Incorporate lessons learned into Quality Documents.
