CEIS | Clover Leaf Solutions is seeking an experienced R&D Engineer 2 or 3 to support complex manufacturing and process development efforts within the Pit Technologies (PT) Division at LANL. This division delivers high-consequence nuclear component manufacturing that directly impacts national security and strategic weapons production.
The selected engineer will serve as a Process and Systems Engineer, collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to develop, troubleshoot, and optimize processes involving high-value, hazardous material machining and glovebox operations. The role includes integrating Conduct of Engineering (CoE), Conduct of Operations (CoO), Conduct of Maintenance (CoM), and quality/safety program requirements into execution.
Depending on experience level, the engineer may also lead initiatives, mentor junior staff, or contribute significantly to cross-divisional R&D and production interface projects.
Core Responsibilities For R&D Engineer 2:Serve as a contributing technical expert within operations and R&D teams to address process challenges and manufacturing risks.
Support the design, analysis, testing, and implementation of production-scale process improvements.
Interface with stakeholders to ensure engineering documentation, hazard assessments, and process controls meet program and regulatory standards.
Troubleshoot production equipment issues and develop engineering solutions to maintain operational readiness.
Participate in the development and execution of experiments, data collection, and reporting.
Present work findings to internal teams and participate in cross-functional meetings.
For R&D Engineer 3:In addition to the responsibilities above:
Lead complex R&D and engineering projects, providing technical direction and guidance to team members.
Evaluate product design requirements for manufacturability and scalability in the nuclear environment.
Review, author, and approve technical procedures ensuring alignment with CoE and safety authorization basis.
Mentor early-career engineers and postdocs.
Represent LANL engineering efforts to regulatory bodies and industry stakeholders when necessary.
Minimum Qualifications R&D Engineer 2:Bachelor’s degree in engineering (ABET accredited) and at least 4 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Intermediate knowledge of mechanical or manufacturing engineering principles.
Experience supporting production or R&D projects in highly regulated environments.
Demonstrated ability to plan and conduct engineering analyses, experiments, or troubleshooting efforts.
Effective communication and documentation skills.
R&D Engineer 3 (in addition to above):Master’s degree in engineering and at least 6 years of experience, or equivalent (PhD preferred at this level).
Expert-level understanding of nuclear manufacturing or high-hazard operations.
Strong track record leading multi-disciplinary teams and mentoring technical staff.
Demonstrated ability to influence technical decision-making, lead readiness assessments, and align engineering efforts with mission objectives.
DOE O 426.2 Compliance: Requires a Bachelor of Science in Engineering or related science, plus 2 years job-related experience and 1 year of nuclear experience. Formal academic programs may substitute for up to 2 years of experience.
Desired QualificationsExperience in glovebox operations, nuclear manufacturing, or R&D environments involving radioactive, toxic, or explosive materials.
Familiarity with LANL’s Integrated Work Management (IWM), ISSM, and formal procedure development (e.g., AP-01000 Preparer).
Working knowledge of design controls, risk mitigation strategies, and quality systems in DOE/NR/NNSA environments.
Active DOE Q clearance or ability to obtain.
Certification or experience in Lean, Six Sigma, or process improvement tools.
