Position Summary:
The Procedure Nurse is responsible for insertion of Peripheral IV catheters, Midlines and PICC lines. This position provides the RN patient care in diagnostic radiology as it pertains to procedural sedation and patient assessment during the procedure.
The procedure nurse is an integral part of the on-going education of all hospital employed RN as it pertains to vascular access
Position Requirements:
Active State of Maine RN License
BLS
ACLS .
Position Responsibilities:
+ Assess patient needs for peripheral intravenous access.
+ Initiates peripheral IV therapy per physician order and verifies order against the patient’s chart in accordance with the State Board of Nursing regulations.
+ Performs daily IV therapy rounds when applicable
+ Assesses peripheral IV sites for signs of infection/infiltration or other complications.
+ Assesses IV site dressings and tubing for documented expiration dates.
+ Documents all IV therapy care and assessments in the patient EMR.
+ Changes peripheral IV’s as necessary
+ Discontinues IV sites per physician orders
+ Responds to all patient care units to assist with IV insertion or assessment of complications.
+ Provides IV therapy resource to all inpatient care units, radiology, Diagnostic Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine, peri-op area, ED and infusion outpatient clinic if necessary
+ Evaluates patient for PICC/midline therapy per physician.
+ Places PICC/midlines per physician order or protocol and documents intervention in the patient’s record. Reviews x-ray results in PACS x-ray storage system.
+ Participates in orientation of hospital staff to IV therapy in accordance with the nurse educator
+ Assists in precepting and helping to staff to maintain IV therapy competencies.
+ Provide patient and family education about IV therapy needs during hospitalization and upon discharge when applicable
+ Assess central lines to include PICC ports for clotting, infection and other related complications.
+ Ability to de-clot central lines per hospital policy.
+ Maintains knowledge of asepsis and infection control techniques r/t IV therapy
+ Ability to access and maintain port-a-cath devices
+ Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology relating IV therapy
+ Ability to assist staff with blood transfusion with knowledge of reactions and fluid/electrolyte imbalance
+ Demonstrate ability to work independently and/or collaboratively
+ Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with other staff members verbally and in writing.
+ Maintain working knowledge of all IV administration pumps and tubing in the facility
+ Prioritizes patient care related IV therapy according the resources available on each nursing unit, patient needs and nursing supervisor delegation.
+ Utilize critical thinking skills.
+ Assist director in collecting and analyzing PI data related to vascular access
+ Works in collaboration with director to ensure IV needs are met throughout the institution.
+ Assist director to ensure that facility staff maintains IV and PICC competency.
+ Medical Imaging:
+ Assist and support during interventional, CT, nuclear medicine, and ultrasound procedures. Start IV's,
+ Medicate when necessary, dressing care of all drains and operative sites etc.
+ Provide Procedural Sedation during interventional procedures.
+ Follows up the next day with patient status post interventional procedures such as aspirations,
+ drainage & biopsies
+ Recovers and discharges patient according to procedure.
+ Correctly identifies rhythms via the monitor, rhythm strip, and/or educational material and states the
+ significance of conduction, cardiac output, risk to patient, progression possibilities and treatments per
+ ACLS guidelines
+ Performs in the circulator role in Endoscopy for TEE and TEE/CV procedures.
+ Performs other duties as assigned by director or supervisor
