Prior Authorization Pharmacist (100% work-from-home)

A Prior Authorization Pharmacist position is now available through Adecco Healthcare and Life Science.
The essential functions of a Pharmacists in Prior Authorization are reviewing Prior Authorization cases and rendering coverage determinations based on clinical criteria and plan design in a fast paced and dynamic environment. Prior Authorization staff pharmacists review all adverse coverage determinations before final decisions are rendered and as required by law work in conjunction with medical directors to render final decisions on coverage determinations.
**Location:** Phoenix, Tucson, Sedona, and Mesa, Arizona (work from home)
**Contract type:** Minimum 9-month temp/contract role (possibility of extension or temp-hire)
**Work hours:** You must be available to work Monday-Friday from 5:00am-midnight MST/PST on a rotating 8-hour shift (some weekends and holidays may be required). Shift after training is an 8-hour shift with an hour lunch. Candidate must be available as early as 5am and as late as midnight.
**Training:** Training is for 5 weeks. Training time is Monday-Friday from 8:00am-5:00pm local time. After training period, an 8-week glide path while you are learning and getting up to speed. You must be available to attend every day during the 5-week training period. There will be no requests for time off during that timeframe.
**Start date:** August 25, 2025 (no flexibility)
**Contract length:** Until June 30, 2026
**Salary range:** $54.00/hr. - $59.00/hr. - depending on location and your level of experience
This is a dynamic work environment and requires flexibility to meet business needs and adaptability to frequent changes. This position is for a Clinical Pharmacist working in the Prior Authorization unit within Customer Service department of OptumRx, a UnitedHealth Group company. This is a call center-based business segment and strict work guidelines are employed. The pharmacist’s primary role is reviewing Prior Authorization cases and rendering coverage determinations based on clinical criteria and plan design in a fast paced and dynamic environment.
**Primary Responsibilities:**
Clinical Support and Decision-Making: Serve as a clinical resource working from a computer, reviewing prior authorizations and receiving phone calls from prior authorization pharmacy technicians and/or healthcare providers to gather, clarify, and assess detailed clinical information. Interpret medical and pharmacy policy criteria to make sound and timely coverage determinations in accordance with federal, state, and organizational guidelines.
Coverage Determination and Consultation: Consult directly with prescribing physicians and healthcare providers to clarify clinical questions, interpret guideline criteria, and provide decisions on prior authorization requests. Ensure determinations are clinically sound, evidence-based, and compliant with applicable regulations and payer policies.
Medication Utilization Review: Collaborate with pharmacy technicians and/or prescribers to provide clinical insights on appropriate medication usage. Recommend cost-effective, formulary-compliant therapeutic alternatives when applicable, supporting optimal patient care and medication access.
Regulatory and Policy Compliance: Maintain full compliance with state and federal pharmacy laws, Medicare Part D, Medicaid, and commercial benefit regulations. Accurately document case decisions in accordance with internal protocols, auditing standards, and confidentiality policies.
Case Review and Clinical Assessment: Apply critical thinking and advanced clinical judgment to gather and evaluate complex medical and pharmacy data. Use established clinical guidelines, benefit policies, and drug utilization criteria to make consistent and accurate coverage determinations within required timeframes.
Workload and Time Management: Effectively manage case volume by organizing workload, setting daily priorities, and meeting productivity and quality benchmarks. Adapt to fluctuating demands while maintaining accuracy and professionalism under pressure.
Team Collaboration and Communication: Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills when collaborating with team members, internal departments (e.g., compliance, quality assurance), and external providers. Foster a cooperative work environment through timely and respectful communication.
Customer Service and Conflict Resolution: Respond promptly and professionally to inquiries or concerns from providers, pharmacy staff, or internal teams. Investigate and resolve escalated issues or complaints with a service-first mindset, maintaining a positive and solutions-oriented approach.
Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement: Adhere to departmental quality assurance and improvement protocols by participating in audits, process evaluations, and training initiatives. Support continuous quality and service enhancements through feedback and collaboration.

**Additional Responsibilities:**
Perform other duties as assigned by management, which may include participating in process improvement projects or supporting departmental initiatives.

**Required Qualifications:**
Pharmacists: Bachelors or Doctorate of Pharmacy; Active State Pharmacist License
6 + months of Customer Service/Customer Relations with Healthcare professionals
Basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel (ability to create, edit, and save a basic spreadsheet), Microsoft Word (ability to create, edit, and save a basic document), and Microsoft Outlook (ability to send emails).
**Able to work 5am to 12:00am midnight with ability to work flexible hours, including OT and weekends.**
