The Principal, Molding & Tooling Engineering leads strategic and technical initiatives related to injection molding processes, mold/tooling design, and manufacturing optimization. This role ensures tooling solutions are innovative, cost-effective, scalable, and meet performance and quality standards. The Principal Engineer will collaborate cross-functionally with design, quality, supply chain, and manufacturing teams to support new product introduction (NPI) and continuous improvement across global operations. In this role, a typical day will include:
Supports molding production as subject matter expert pertaining to liquid silicone molding and 2k or 2 shot molding processes.
Designing arrangement of manufacturing equipment to ensure most efficient and productive layout.
Designing the sequence of production operations, specifying procedures for the fabrication of applicable tools and equipment, and adapting machinery in response to factory conditions.
Conducting tests throughout all stages of production to determine control over applicable variables and troubleshooting/solving production problems.
Providing guidance to product design engineering on technical specifications that will best utilize equipment and manufacturing techniques.
Ensuring that production processes and procedures are in compliance with regulations.
Project Management of new equipment purchases including capex financial management.
Collaboration with internal customers and external suppliers at a detailed technical level.
Onboarding of new technologies such as double shot injection molding. Ground up injection molding process building using a variety of plastics (E.g. Polycarbonate, acrylic, LSR - liquid silicone rubber) and name brands of equipment. (E.g. Nissei, Husky, Arburg, & Engel).
Process/Equipment qualification - IQ/OQ/PQ & troubleshooting via scientific molding principles.
All other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO ALCON:
Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +13 yrs; Assoc.+9 yrs; M.S.+2 yrs; PhD+0 yrs)
The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English
