Principal Systems Engineer – SME Edge Compute
As a Principal Systems Engineer, you will interact with DOD customers as well as other customers using PacStar equipment in tactical networks to understand their needs and then help the software, hardware, and networking development teams create solutions to meet those needs. Your primary focus will be on the development, testing, and productization of PacStar Communications products.
This position requires frequent hands-on work with other members of the product development team, as well as with Product Line Management. Your collaboration with team members will drive the overall success of the PacStar product system execution for specific product lines and application areas, including tactical communications, edge processing, and networking technologies. By evaluating market needs, establishing technical requirements and identifying technical solution gaps, you will be part of a cohesive team that develop and deliver new and innovative solutions to our customers, supporting our sound business growth.
You will be required to travel (up to 25%) to various customer/technology partner sites to capture and/or convey technical solution sets associated with the assigned product, and to give demonstrations and training.

Your Challenge:
Direct experience with rugged compute or networking products used in SWaP constrained and DDIL environments; strong working knowledge of AI/ML and data processing workflows, local and cloud-based computing environments, and network architecture is highly desirable
Collaborate with internal and external product stakeholders to translate marketing level requirements into detailed system requirements and architecture, work with existing and develop new technology partners to develop products from inception through development and V&V to full rate production delivery
Ensure that our products and technical solutions provide market differentiation through features, price, services, support, or other key customer value propositions, resulting in increased market share and revenue growth
Develop and implement technical strategies for existing and new products; prepare technical operational use cases that ensure an understanding of the operational objectives of target markets; translate those into baseline technical reference designs that result in integrated solutions for the customer
Work with hardware engineering, CTO and Marketing team to develop technical solutions that meet emerging market needs including feature sets, technical specifications, Design to Cost targets, pricing models, and related activities
Work with Product Line Manager to provide systems approaches to address customer requirements and provide technical input on solution proposals
Provide Subject Matter Expertise (SME) to customers and sales colleagues with pre-sales technical and application knowledge, and innovative product and application insights
Work with the marketing and product management teams to support creation of technical white paper and thought leadership materials.
Support third-party collaborative product development, and support cooperative marketing/sales and business capture activities
Participate in industry working groups to contribute and gain insights to industry open standards evolution and influence industry standards where needed

What you bring:
A relevant engineering degree, or equivalent experience
10 or more years of relevant, progressive experience in System Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Hardware Engineering or Computer Networking
US citizenship, residence
A working knowledge of technology, system architecture, hardware, software, AI/ML and related support requirements within the Defense and Aerospace markets
Knowledge of embedded computing systems architecture, hardware, software, and application within the military/aerospace industry, including familiarity with some, or all, the following technologies:
Experience with ruggedized product design under MIL-STD-810H or similar
Strong working knowledge of x86 and Arm based systems, including performance and power efficiency characteristics
Strong working knowledge of LAN and WAN, wired and wireless, networking technologies
Strong understanding of GPU and FPGA system design, applications and tradeoffs between different computing technologies, CPU, GPU, NPU, FPGA.
Familiarity with Cybersecurity standards, systems design, and implementation
Familiarity with operating systems, Windows, Linux, virtualization and containerization
An existing US security clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain security clearance to Secret level within 24 months preferable
Experience in the U.S. DoD environment
Understanding of basic networking concepts such as routing and switching
Understanding of basic security concepts such as encryption and PKI
Ability to work with cross-functional teams to deliver on a common goal
Good communication, presentation, and leadership skills
Able to travel to customer sites with little notice
Accuracy and attention to detail is a must
Must be able to self-organize workloads and manage all deadlines
