**Description** The Engineering Science Division of Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is seeking a **Principal Subject Matter (SME) 2** to join our Aircraft Operating Surfaces (AOS) located at Tyndall Air Force Base, FL. This is an exciting opportunity to lead and assist in a variety of highly technical research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) projects covering such topics as structures, pavements, maintenance, materials, and/or geotechnical engineering. As a Principal SME you will be responsible for developing new business opportunities, maintaining deep awareness of customer challenges, and delivering client-focused solutions. Responsible for bringing extensive client-faced project experience supporting the Air Force and/or relevant commercial clients. Success in this role requires the ability to engage directly with senior stakeholders, shape strategic initiatives and drive growth within the Air Force related markets. The position requires the ability to work with a team of highly qualified engineers, technicians, and support staff in a dynamic environment throughout the entire project life cycle. Some of the projects include applied bench-level research, advanced technology development, prototype/pilot scale systems design, construction, and evaluation in field demonstrations and operationally relevant environments, testing and evaluation of materials, technologies, and processes in air force operations, and improving operations and maintenance capabilities through insertion of alternative pavements, materials, technologies, processes and procedures. **What you will do as a Principal SME 2:** + Identify new opportunities within the Air Force contracting environment primarily focusing on Tyndall AFB, FL (and nearby Air Force commands). + Conduct market research to identify emerging trends and opportunities in the Air Force engineering domain. + Maintain strategic relationships with Air Force program and contracting entities. + Identify current and future engineering needs withing the Air Force + Develop and construct in the expanding footprint of the Air Force + Advice on Air Force operational protocols, technologies, strategic priorities. + Offer insights that shape program development, proposal strategies, and technical content. + Plans, design and directs civil engineering projects such as roads, railroads, airports and other transportation infrastructure + Analyze maps, blueprints, drawings, tests, and aerial photographs on soil composition, terrain, hydrological characteristics, and other topographical and geologic data to plan and design projects. + Ensure all project deliverables meet quality standards and client expectations. + Provide updates to senior management and clients. + Monitor project progress, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies. + Manage budgets, track expenses, and ensure cost efficiency. + Use various analytical, scientific, and engineering methods to execute research, development, testing, and evaluation. + Prepare formal reports and presentations + Develop and evaluate new pavement technologies + Assess and summarize relevant literature, research, and emerging technologies + Prepare formal reports and presentations for customers **SME preferred experience and skills:** Technical Expertise: + Deep knowledge of a specific subject area + Up-to-date with industry standards, best practices, and emerging trends. Analytical Thinking: + Able to break down complex topics into understandable components. + Strong problem-solving skills; offers practical, informed solutions. Communication Skills: + Can translate technical or specialized information into terms understandable by non-experts. + Able to clearly explain ideas in written documents, presentations, and discussions. Collaboration & Teamwork + Works effectively with cross-functional teams (project managers, writers, engineers, stakeholders). + Willing to review and provide input on deliverables (e.g., proposals, training material, technical reports). Attention to Detail: + High accuracy in reviewing technical content, data, or processes. + Spots inconsistencies or gaps that others might miss. Leadership & Mentorship + Provides guidance to less experienced team members. + May train or coach others on their area of expertise. Time Management: + Manage contributions alongside other responsibilities. + Meets deadlines and can prioritize SME input effectively within fast-paced timelines. Research & Continuous Learning: + Keeps current with changes in regulations, technology, or methods. + Proactively researches new solutions or methodologies. **SME requirements:** This will be a remote position.
