The primary work location will be on-site at the Raytheon Tucson office. Some travel may be required to meet and work with vendors and to support testing and other activities as needed.

The Principal Mechanical Design Engineer will design, integrate, and test mechanical-focused hardware using computer-aided design, mechanical analyses, and consistent coordination and communication across engineering disciplines to ensure successful hardware performance. Tasks include supporting development or production, leading proposal activities, and technical management of mechanical engineering disciplines throughout the product life cycle.

What You Will Do

Work with engineers to propose, design, develop, integrate, and test hardware within the Advanced Airframes mechanical design department.

Contribute to one or more of our contract-funded and independent research efforts, each of which is at a different phase of development (proposal, design, and integration/test). Engineers are generally assigned to one effort at a time but may work multiple efforts over the course of several years.

Communicate with engineering team members across the business and suppliers to analyze, model, and document the design technical data package (TDP) and its capabilities and compliance to requirements.

Work under limited supervision and act as the responsible engineer often in a project management role over entire subsystems within an effort.

What You Will Learn

This position will focus on supporting one of the hypersonic programs currently in development and requires an extensive knowledge of producibility principles and demonstrated implementation of these principles into the design development lifecycle.

Typically viewed as a subject matter expert within the mechanical discipline. Have advanced knowledge of the mechanical development process with an emphasis on producibility.

The ability to direct, delegate and review the work of others.

Qualifications You Must Have

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace, Engineering Science, Math, or other Engineering discipline

8 years of experience in mechanical design, development, and/or test, preferably of defense-related components or systems

Experience in airframe development, or electronics packaging, or mechanisms, for missiles or similar applications

Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), basic tolerance analyses, and drawing practices and interpretation for mechanical hardware

Experience of producibility practices and/or DFMA design principles.

Qualifications We Prefer

Master of Science (MS) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace, Engineering Science, Math, or other Engineering disciplines

Experience developing and executing a plan to development a mechanical component or subsystem

Experience with thermal and structural analyses or with analysts to specify requirements and design to environments.

Experience with effective communication (written and verbal) during collaboration with others to document design actions and results, to perform trade studies, and to communicate to program management and customers through presentations and reports.

Ability to solve complex problems

Experience coaching, reviewing, and delegating work to lower-level professionals

The salary range for this role is 101,000 USD - 203,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
