We are looking for a highly skilled and strategic Principal Infrastructure Engineer to join our global team. This is a senior, hands-on role that requires a blend of deep technical expertise, architectural design skills, and a strong programming background. The ideal candidate will be a technical leader and a mentor, responsible for architecting, designing, implementing, and supporting our mission-critical infrastructure on Amazon Web Services (AWS). This role demands a high degree of automation, a commitment to security and operational excellence, and the ability to work effectively in a global, 24x7 environment.

About You

Key Responsibilities:

Architecture & Design: Act as the lead technical authority for our AWS infrastructure. Architect and design secure, scalable, highly available, and cost-effective cloud solutions that align with business requirements and industry best practices.

Implementation & Automation: Drive the implementation of infrastructure-as-code (IaC) using tools like Terraform or AWS CloudFormation. Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines to automate the provisioning, configuration, and deployment of all infrastructure components.

Operating Systems & Management: Possess expert-level skills in Linux administration, including system hardening, performance tuning, and troubleshooting. Implement and maintain solutions for the centralized management of operating systems across our fleet.

Vulnerability Management & Remediation: Take ownership of the vulnerability management lifecycle. Utilize security tooling, such as Wiz, to identify and prioritize vulnerabilities across the cloud infrastructure and host environments. Lead and execute the remediation of these vulnerabilities in a timely and effective manner.

Programming & Scripting: Leverage advanced programming skills, particularly in Python, to develop custom tools, APIs, and scripts that automate complex operational tasks, integrate disparate systems, and improve overall system efficiency.

Operational Excellence: Provide expert-level support and troubleshooting for complex infrastructure issues. Establish and enforce operational best practices for monitoring, logging, alerting, and incident response to ensure a highly reliable 24x7 service.

Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Mentor and guide junior and mid-level engineers on the team. Lead technical discussions, conduct code reviews, and champion a culture of continuous learning and engineering excellence.

Communication & Collaboration: Serve as a key technical liaison between the infrastructure team and development, security, and product teams. Clearly articulate complex technical concepts, tradeoffs, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Security & Compliance: Champion a "security-first" mindset. Design and implement security controls and governance policies, including AWS IAM, security groups, and encryption, to ensure compliance with company standards and regulatory frameworks.

Cost Optimization: Proactively monitor and optimize cloud spend. Identify opportunities to improve resource utilization and leverage AWS cost management tools to drive efficiency without compromising performance or reliability.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

12+ years of progressive experience in infrastructure engineering, with at least 5 years of dedicated experience with AWS.

Deep, hands-on expertise in a broad range of AWS services (e.g., EC2, VPC, S3, RDS, Lambda, ECS/EKS, IAM).

Expert proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform.

Strong programming skills in Python is a must. Experience with other languages like Go or Node.js is a plus.

Extensive experience with Linux system administration, including centralized management tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef, SaltStack).

Proven experience with vulnerability management, security tooling (e.g., Wiz, Qualys, Nessus), and hands-on remediation.

Proven experience in designing and implementing CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, AWS CodePipeline).

Demonstrated experience in a senior technical role, with a track record of leading complex projects and influencing technical direction.

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly present to and collaborate with diverse teams globally.

Experience working in a global, distributed team and supporting 24x7 initiatives.

Our Approach to Flexible Work

With Flex Work, we’re combining the best of both worlds: in-person time and remote. Our approach enables our teams to deepen connections, maintain a strong community, and do their best work. We know that flexibility can take shape in many ways, so rather than a number of required days in-office each week, we simply spend at least half (50%) of our time each quarter in the office or in the field with our customers, prospects, and partners (depending on role). This means you'll have the freedom to create a flexible schedule that caters to your business, team, and personal needs, while being intentional to make the most of time spent together. Those in our remote "home office" roles also have the opportunity to come together in our offices for important moments that matter.

Are you being referred to one of our roles? If so, ask your connection at Workday about our Employee Referral process!
