Job Purpose: 

A Principal Highways Engineer will be responsible for managing technical aspects of larger highways projects or components of major projects, meeting financial, quality and time objectives and meeting or exceeding client expectations. They may undertake a Project Management Role or a Design Manager Role in line with the relevant Arcadis competence requirements and work alongside team leadership. They will also manage the delivery of Highways projects in accordance with Arcadis management systems to meet time, quality, budgetary and health and safety targets, working to ensure maximum client satisfaction, championing client care and proactively supporting the client. A Principal Engineer will also promote the culture of the business. 

Key Accountabilities:

Promote Health, Safety and Well-being good practice within team Work collaboratively with other design disciplines within an agreed engineering management environment to integrate the overall design or solution Maintain strong working relationship with aligned Arcadis Global resources and ensures that local staff work effectively with Global Design colleagues Develop and maintain a good understanding of the services delivered by Arcadis, of the client’s business and the industry sector to facilitate personal networking and to consolidate personal and company credibility in the industry Oversee an agreed scope of work and the operational workload of a project team including sub-contractors, ensuring work is allocated appropriately and resources are fully utilised  Manage the performance of team members and sub-contractors  Present and gain agreement of design options and opportunities to maximise the profitability of design components and drive the implementation of these  Provide technical advice to team members, to support them in their delivery on the project and in their professional development When undertaking the role of a Project Manager: Manage commercial aspects of the project  Drive project performance, service delivery and technical and commercial outcomes  Communicate with team members to ensure that they understand, and become engaged with, the project strategy  Manage the deployment of resources for the project  Work collaboratively with other design disciplines to ensure the integration of the overall design or solution and manage the production of, and quality assurance of the design  Lead interdisciplinary reviews of project deliverables on behalf of engineering discipline  Keep up to date with developments in the Highways and wider transportation sector and with technical and legislative developments and seek out opportunities to develop a strong professional profile at a national level (e.g. conference presentations, publications and participation in technical committees) Maintain records of Continuing Professional Development and can make these available for audit by their professional institution

Dimensions of the job:

A Principal Engineer will typically be assigned to provide a controlling technical role on medium size, moderately complex projects in a single discipline. They will coordinate and manage project teams of 5 to 10 engineers and technicians and will be responsible for technical delivery of medium size projects or elements of larger projects with fee levels of typically in range of £100K - £500K. When undertaking the role of a Project Manager, they will also be responsible for the successful delivery of several lower category projects or a higher category project under mentoring where necessary.

Key Qualifications and Experience: 

Have a BSc/BEng or MSc/MEng or equivalent in a relevant discipline

Achieved Chartered or Incorporated Engineer professional status, or equivalent

Relevant experience including supervision of elements of large, complex projects and/or working in a project management role, have project management experience

A Principal Engineer will be able to lead and provide direction and technical advice to team members, to support them in their delivery on the project and in their professional development. They will be able to identify the limits of both their personal knowledge and skills the limits of their team's skill and knowledge and exercise sound holistic independent judgement and take responsibility.

They will also understand and comply with the Code of Conduct operated by their professional institution, plan, carry out and record CPD and encourage others in their professional development including engaging with activities promoted by professional institutions.

A Principal Engineer shall communicate well with others at all levels including effective use of English orally and in writing including being able to discuss ideas and plan competently and with confidence. 

They will also understand how to manage health, safety and welfare within their own area of responsibility and be experienced in leading, and working with, people from varied discipline, backgrounds and cultures. They will manage teams and develop staff to meet changing technical and managerial needs, manage quality processes and provide technical ownership of the project. They will be able to provide input to estimates for the engineering budget and schedule and to oversee technical resources to meet requirements on large, straightforward projects.
