The Principal Algorithm Development Engineer will lead the technical implementation of next-generation Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) algorithms within Insulet’s strategic insulin therapy optimization platform. This role is responsible for translating research-grade algorithm designs into robust, commercial-grade software, ensuring seamless integration with cutting-edge insulin pump hardware and software.

You will be a key contributor in bridging the gap between research and productization, applying best-in-class software development practices, driving regulatory compliance, and enabling safe and effective real-world use of advanced insulin delivery systems.


Responsibilities:

Lead the development and integration of novel insulin therapy optimization algorithms into commercial and experimental insulin pump platforms.Own the technical implementation of algorithms across both research and commercial codebases, ensuring consistency, reliability, and performance.Translate research-grade AID concepts into production-ready software, with robust handling of edge cases and real-world variability.Apply modern software development practices to algorithm implementation, including:Automated unit testing and validationRequirement-driven test generationAI-assisted validation and simulationCollaborate with cross-functional teams (regulatory, software, hardware, clinical, and marketing) to meet design control and regulatory compliance requirements, with a focus on successful FDA submissions.Conduct risk analyses and develop mitigations for algorithm behavior in real-world use scenarios.Present technical findings and project updates to leadership and non-technical stakeholders.Mentor junior engineers and promote a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement.Stay current with industry trends, regulatory guidance, and emerging technologies in AID and medical device software.Perform other duties as required.


Education and Experience:

Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field (Master’s degree with exceptional experience may be considered).Minimum of 5 years of experience in algorithm development, validation, and deployment in clinical or commercial medical device settings.Proven experience in the medical device or healthcare industry.


Preferred Skills and Competencies:

Proficiency in analytic and modeling tools such as Python, R, MATLAB, or equivalent.Strong programming skills in C/C++, C#, or Java.Experience with clinical data analysis and interpretation.Familiarity with FDA regulatory processes, including Computational Modeling and Simulation Guidelines.Expertise in control systems, model-based design, and embedded systems.Knowledge of software engineering best practices, including version control, CI/CD, and documentation.Experience with risk management standards (e.g., ISO 14971) and design control processes (e.g., IEC 62304).Experience with automated testing frameworks and simulation environments.Publications, patents, or contributions to commercial AID systems are a strong plus.Ability to work independently while maintaining alignment with cross-functional teams and business objectives.
 

NOTE: This position is eligible for 100% remote working arrangements (may work from home/virtually 100%; may also work hybrid on-site/virtual as desired).

Additional Information:

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $166,275.00 - $249,412.50. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position in the primary work location in the US. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
