Mary’s Mercy Center (MMC) is a Catholic faith-based non-profit organization that provides services to homeless families and individuals. MMC operates Mary’s Haven, a 12 to 24-month transitional living program for pregnant mothers, and/or mothers with young children. Mary’s Haven operates an onsite preschool program that provides a play-based early education curriculum for children in placement at the home, ages 2½ through 5 years. Under the supervision of the Director of Housing Programs, the Preschool Teacher will develop and provide educational, nutritional, and health/safety activities; attend staff and parent meetings, observe, report and document on the progress of children; document disabilities; report suspected child abuse; communicate with staff, parents, and children; and supervise teacher aides. The Preschool Teacher will also implement curriculum, provide daily instruction, evaluate, and submit reports on student progress related to grant funding.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop curriculum that addresses cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development of preschool children, including those with special needs. Provide learning experiences and instruction that develop age-appropriate social interaction skills, basic math and letter recognition skills, awareness of proper personal health and nutrition habits, language skills, and creative abilities. Interact with parents of enrolled children both at the school site to assist in skill development and resolution of learning problems identified in the classroom. Develop educational plans for each student; observe and document student progress; modify instructional approach as necessary to meet special needs. Provide supervision and direction for instructional aides; evaluate performance; provide input to Site Supervisors on the quality of work performed by Aides. Prepare lesson plans, small learning group plans, attendance sheets, and reports for inclusion in each child's official file. Maintain a safe and healthy environment for children through close visual observation of daily activities during instructional and transition time and inspection of areas utilized for instructional purposes. Hold periodic meetings with parents at the site; attend both scheduled parent conferences and special parent advisory meetings. Identify children with developmental problems and symptoms of abuse and refer to program staff assigned to meet particular needs or report to the Site Supervisor. Make child abuse referrals as required by law. Assist in the administration of health services screenings and assure that school files reflect results of tests. Work closely with program staff in developing curriculum, which will provide appropriate learning experiences. Ensure the safety and well-being of children, complying with all provisions of State and Federal laws pertaining to mandated reporting. Maintain confidentiality of all records.  Adhere to employer policies regarding conduct and confidential information.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A completed/awarded Associate's degree (or higher) in Early Childhood Education/Child Development, Education, Home Economics, Music, Art, Library Science, Physical Education & Recreation, Psychology, Family Studies, or other Early Childhood Education/Development related fields. Must be able to complete California Mandated Reporter training if selected. Child Development Permit: Possess a valid/active CA Child Development Teacher Permit (or higher-level permit) issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). Applicants who possess a Children's Center Permit may also qualify under this option. Note: Qualifying degrees or coursework must be completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education. Two years of experience working in a preschool or elementary school program (public or private), or two years of experience working for a childcare or foster care provider with children ages 0-5. Proficient with Microsoft Office 365 programs (Outlook, Word, Excel). Experience with data collection and data entry

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Must be able to lift and carry a small child (up to 50 lbs.) as needed/in the event of an emergency. Other physical demands include: sitting, walking, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, crawling, twisting, grasping, fine manipulation, pushing/pulling, reaching, stooping, using smell and touch, working outside and vision and hearing. Must pass a tuberculosis test. Must obtain a valid San Bernardino County Food Handler's card and qualifying First Aid/CPR cards within two (2) weeks of hire and maintain throughout employment.
