This is a practical nurse training program, in which the incumbent is enrolled in an accredited practical nursing education program to learn to perform the administration of care to designated patients. The incumbent must attend classes and clinical education as prescribed by the education program and must maintain academic standing required to graduate from the program. When not in classes or clinicals, the incumbent will perform a variety of indirect or direct patient care duties as allowed. Incumbents must successfully pass the Licensed Practical Nursing board exam in the state of practice and will transition to a Licensed Practical Nurse position upon licensing.To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education
Required – High school diploma or equivalent and must be accepted into and actively attending an approved Practical Nurse Education program.
Work Experience
Required – None
Preferred – 1 year of direct patient care experience.
Certifications
Required – Student nursing license from appropriate state must be obtained prior to entering the educational program and Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
Skilled in effective verbal and written communication while possessing strong interpersonal talent along with the ability to present information clearly and professionally to a variety of people in the academic and work setting.Knowledgeable and proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role as well as keyboard computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information.Ability to maintain reliable computer and internet access during the span of the program to complete assignments and online course modules in a timely fashion as well as retain reliable transportation to travel to various sites.Skilled and excel at time-management, prioritization, and organization of tasks and projects to succeed academically and in a professional setting.Ability to delegate, make decisive decisions and maintain confidential information.Ability to meet state board of nursing requirements to obtain a nursing license by examination upon entry into program.Job Duties
Attend all classes and clinical training sessions as required by the educational program; successfully completes coursework and examinations, maintains satisfactory academic progress, and meets all requirements necessary for graduation.
Attend meetings with the assigned workforce development team member and/or leader.
Provide indirect or direct patient care duties within their scope of practice at Ochsner facilities as scheduled and prescribed by the department leaders.
Convey and communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, family members, and visitors providing observations of the patient and intervening as needed to maintain patient safety. Maintains ongoing communication with leader and assigned workforce development staff.
Report concerns and challenges immediately with education partner to leader and assigned workforce development staff, especially issues that may result in academic failure or expulson from the education program.
Communicates education schedule and any changes to the leader and assigned workforce development staff.
Abides by all rules set out by the education provider as well as all Ochsner policies and procedures, in particular Ochsner's time and attendance policy.

(Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible. NOTE: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.
Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue.
The incumbent works in a patient care area; works in an area where patients enter; works directly with patients; and/or works with specimens that could contain communicable diseases. The incumbent has an occupational risk for exposure to all communicable diseases.
Because the incumbent works within a healthcare setting, there may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning and/or disposal of contaminated waste. The risk level of exposure may increase depending on the essential job duties of the role.
