Job Description:
Pore Pressure and Fracture Gradient Specialist
Our purpose is to deliver energy to the world, today and tomorrow. For over 100 years, bp has focused on discovering, developing, and producing oil and gas in the nations where we operate. We are one of the few companies globally that can provide governments and customers with an integrated energy offering. Delivering our strategy sustainably is fundamental to achieving our ambition to be a net zero company by 2050 or sooner.
Would you like to join our team to support well planning, execution, abandonment, and continuous improvement through the development of compliant pore and fracture pressure forecasts?
We are looking for a Pore Pressure and Fracture Gradient (PPFG) Specialist!
The PPFG Specialist provides technical expertise to support safe, efficient well planning and execution across multiple drill centers and exploration projects. The role develops robust pore pressure and fracture gradient forecasts, performs wellbore stability analyses, supports real-time pore pressure detection, and helps manage drilling-related subsurface risks. The specialist works closely with integrated well delivery teams, shares learnings across regions, and helps develop less experienced team members.
This role is open to Azerbaijani citizens only.
Key Responsibilities
PPFG Forecasting
Develop integrated PPFG forecasts for exploration, appraisal, and development wells by combining geological understanding, seismic data, and offset well data (pressure data, gas readings, log data) in context. Perform fracture gradient analysis using multiple data sources (leak-off/minifrac tests, drilling and completion events, geological setting).
Pore Pressure Detection / Operational Support
Support real-time pore pressure detection and model calibration for complex wells in collaboration with real-time operations and remote monitoring teams. Assist with well control analysis, breathing/losses investigations, gas events, and real-time uncertainty and risk management.
Wellbore Stability & Drillability
Build wellbore stability models to recommend minimum mud weight and casing setting depths. Perform depleted reservoir drillability and wellbore strengthening assessments.
Planning & Risk Assessment
Provide PPFG/Geomechanics inputs to well planning documents and participate in risk and uncertainty assessments (zonal isolation, broaching, deviation, abandonment, well integrity). Perform post-well analyses to update regional models and workflows.
Coaching & Collaboration
Coach, mentor, and develop PPFG junior staff to ensure robust capability and succession within the discipline. Deliver formal and informal trainings to increase PPFG and Geomechanics knowledge across the wider Subsurface and Wells communities. Actively share learnings in global PPFG/Geomechanics forums and seek opportunities to integrate best practices from other regions.
Workflow and Toolkit Development
Support the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of PPFG and Geomechanics toolkits, ensuring workflows reflect up-to-date industry and bp practices, regional insights, and innovative methods.
In this role, we have the following requirements:
Education
Degree in Geoscience, Engineering, Science, Geomechanics, Mathematics, or a related technical discipline.
Essential Skills & Experience
Strong geoscience and petrophysics knowledge: solid understanding of stratigraphy, structural geology, petroleum systems, basin modelling concepts, seismic interpretation fundamentals, and practical application of log data (e.g., gamma ray, resistivity, density, sonic) for PPFG analysis.
Relevant experience in pore pressure prediction, wellbore stability, and drilling geomechanics.
In-depth understanding of drilling engineering and well planning, including subsurface uncertainty and risk management.
Proficiency with industry-standard software: Techlog, PPFG/Geomechanics Toolkits, Petrel, Power BI, Petrovue and similar software.
Familiarity with operations geology, mud logging, rock mechanics fundamentals, and basic well control principles.
Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to cross-functional teams.
Self-motivated, proactive, collaborative, and committed to high standards of delivery.
Desirable Skills
Coding and data skills (e.g., Python, VBA, SQL, data analysis, automation).
