Job Responsibilities:
Interprets blueprints and building specifications to map layout for pipes, drainage systems, and other plumbing materialsInstalls pipes and fixtures, such as sinks and toilets, for water, gas, steam, air, or other liquidsInstalls supports for pipes, equipment, and fixtures prior to installationAssembles fittings and valves for installationModifies length of pipes, fixtures, and other plumbing materials as needed for a buildingUses saws and pipe cutters as necessaryInstalls heating and air-conditioning systems, including water heatersCollaborates with contractors, construction workers, electricians, pipefitters, and steamfitters in installing and repairing plumbingTests plumbing systems for leaks and other problemsAnalyses problem and identifies appropriate tools and materials for repairChooses plumbing materials based on budget, location, and intended uses of the buildingFollows health and safety standards and complies with building codesWrites report documenting the problem and summary of actions takenPerforms inspections of plumbing systems to identify and replace worn partsPrepares bids and schedules and oversees other workers, such as apprentices and helpers.Educational Requirement:
High School diploma or GED and diploma/certification in plumbing from a technical college.State Board of Examiners Plumbing License or state/local government plumbing license.
