Job Summary/Description:
WMTV 15 News in Madison, Wisconsin, is in search of a photojournalist and editor who excels at identifying, gathering, and editing powerful images and compelling sound. The top candidate has a proven track record of producing content that is “on point” creatively, technically, and in a brand-focused way for TV and our digital platforms.
WMTV photojournalists produce content for all of our platforms: for broadcast on WMTV newscasts and for publication across the station's CTV/streaming, social media, and other digital platforms, including wmtv15news.com.
Top candidates have high and positive-energy and will not settle for “the way we’ve always done things.” We reflect on our work, find ways to do it better than the competition, and embrace new technology and workflows.
Duties/Responsibilities will include (but not be limited to) the following:
• The position includes solo work, as well as working with reporters and anchors on live shots, investigative/promotable content, and special projects, including live, remote broadcasts.
• You will shoot and edit video for daily news broadcasts and all of the station’s digital platforms.
• You will embrace working with our awesome digital producers. This includes sharing updates, videos, and still images from the field as new information is learned. This content will be shared by the digital team on WMTV’s social platforms.
• You will also work together with the digital team to get content (raw video, photos, live feed) online before newscast content airs.
• May assist with live feed/talkbacks with streaming desk anchors/digital producers.
• You must have solid news judgment, excellent communication skills, and the ability to problem solve. Writing skills are a plus. Our photographers don’t just “gather and hand off” their work. When working solo, you are expected to conduct and log your interviews, provide shot sheets, and write copy. When working as a team, collaboration is automatic.
• You will contribute to the entire editorial process. Having journalistic ethics, solid editorial judgement, and creativity is a must.
• If you cannot meet your deadlines, multitask in a fast-paced environment, and keep smiling, this is not the job or newsroom for you.
Qualifications/Requirements:
• We prefer a college degree in journalism or a related field, and at least one or more years of newsroom or digital producing experience.
• Must have a desire to win, a positive attitude, and the ability to reflect on your work and apply feedback.
• Strong research skills, ability to employ critical thinking skills to dig and go “beyond the press release” and/or confirm incoming news tips via email or social media.
• Must be able to work quickly and multitask under deadline pressure and breaking news.
• A strong candidate will have an established and responsible presence on digital platforms, including the station website, social media, and CTV.
• Working knowledge of CMS and Digital platforms, including ARC, Social News Desk, and CrowdTangle. Photoshop experience is a plus.
• Understanding of and adherence to AP Style.
• Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
• Availability to work 1:45-10:45 p.m. with flexibility to work long hours, weekends, and overnights for breaking news and specialized coverage.
• FAA Part 107 Drone License is a plus
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. of gear.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. Motor Vehicle Records check required.
